Nine Hats Wines, one of the newest wineries to take up residence in SODO Urbanworks, announced today that acclaimed pizzaiolo Cary Kemp of West Seattle’s Pizzeria 22 will serve as Executive Chef at the winery’s new Nine Pies Pizzeria, opening in late 2017.
Nine Pies will adjoin Nine Hats’ SODO tasting room at 3861 First Ave. S. Along with pizza by the slice, the 50-seat eatery will offer a full-service Italian lunch and dinner menu that will include New York-style pizza, pasta, calzone, appetizers, salads and desserts. In addition to Nine Hats wines, the pizzeria will also feature a selection of craft beers. The restaurant will have a casual, modern feel reflective of Nine Hats’ urban vibe and will also offer private event dining, as well as catering services.
“The influx of tasting rooms in SODO has outpaced the area’s restaurant scene,” says Nine Hats general manager Cory Brown. “From the beginning, we envisioned more than a tasting room. We wanted to create a gathering place that would become a destination, and the pizzeria is an important part of that experience. Cary’s creative menu design and emphasis on authentic, high-quality Italian cuisine was a perfect match for us.”
No doubt about it, Kemp is a guy who knows his pie. He pioneered authentic Neapolitan-style pizza making in Seattle in the late 1980s and helped launch the hometown classic Via Tribunali, followed by stints at Snoose Junction and Pizzeria Pulcinella. In 2011, he opened his own shop, Pizzeria 22, to much acclaim. Earlier this fall, both Eater Seattle and Thrillist included Pizzeria 22 on their short list of Seattle’s Best Pizzas.
Nine Hats moved its tasting room from Woodinville to SODO in August and is open Thursday-Sunday from 12pm – 6pm. Nine Pies Pizzeria will be open seven days a week.
Further updates on the restaurant’s opening date will be posted on the Nine Pie’s website at ninepiespizza.com.
