Officers responded to the 2500 block of SW Trenton to reports for two men "jumping around" in a van. They found two men hiding i

Early Sunday morning, a tow truck was called to the Junction to impound a van that was illegally parked. But the tow truck driver was punched in the jaw by an intoxicated man who was sleeping in the van. When officers arrived, the suspect, a Morgan Junction resident, refused to obey their commands and repeatedly yelled threats and racial slurs at them, just as he had at the tow truck driver. He was booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault.

A witness saw a man placing grocery items into a backpack at an Alaska Junction store.

Memories of the old Embers

It was the dream of every aspiring West Seattle musician to play The Embers. I was in a band that played there a few times, and on the last occasion a dancing drunk got snagged up in our microphone wires, causing half our equipment to crash to the dance floor. We didn't know it at the time, but it was an omen of The Ember's (and our band's) future.

For us rocker wannabes, Embers, at 1317 Harbor Avenue, and the Admiral Tavern (now the Admiral Pub), were the nearest live music venues. The next closest was King's, on the 12600 block of Pacific Highway South.

'Not until we get married'

I was quietly reading the paper the other day when Elsbeth came by my chair and said she believed her left hip was feeling better.

She had gotten a cortisone shot the week before. She sidled up and asked if I could detect any reduction in the swollen spot where they stuck her with a needle .

I checked. Hmm, I said, in my best doctor voice.

I told her that in order to give her an accurate reading, I would have to make a medical exam of the opposite hip. I was not about to shoot from the hip, so to speak.

Flower house beauty

I liked the cover photo of the "famed Alki flower house." I've often admired it while down at the beach.

However, as to its fame, I wonder how many people know anything about it, such as the location and the identity of the person or persons responsible for the extravaganza of color. Surely the goal was not for the owners to keep a low profile, as anyone who loves flowers must surely slam on the brakes upon seeing the display for the first time. I would love to learn more about it.

On another subject, I want to say how much I appreciate your obituary section.

Conlin clarifies

Thank you for the very good article on my work on the City Council in your July 27 edition. Unfortunately, the headline "Conlin supports monorail here" does not accurately represent my position on the monorail. I have always been skeptical of the monorail as a technology (because of its impacts on the pedestrian environment) and as a solution to our transportation problems (because of its high cost and probably low ridership).

The headline could lead readers to believe that I have changed my position.

Southwest move an affront

Southwest Airline's move to Boeing Field is an affront to many residents of Seattle. The noise created from the planes will negatively impact city neighborhoods, reducing the quality of life for residents of West Seattle, Magnolia, Queen Anne, Ballard, Beacon Hill and Georgetown.

Is Southwest or King County going to provide homes in these communities with soundproofing as was done for SeaTac area properties?
