School 'alleged misdeeds'

As an Arbor Heights parent, I commend you for bringing these alleged financial misdeeds to light (Page One, July 20). It seems to me that any budgetary finagling by a public school principal goes beyond the realm of a "personnel issue," and warrants a public airing.

In addition, the issue of retribution against a whistle-blowing teacher needs to be addressed.

Investigate chip sealing

Recently there has been some repaving of West Seattle roads. I am fortunate to live on Beach Drive, however it seems that Seattle Department of Transportation has been repaving various side roads coming off of Beach Drive (where I leave/enter my residence), using a method called "chip-sealant."

This was developed for and should be used on dirt roads (only!), as the Seattle Department of Transportation website explains.

Chip seal protects streets

Editor's Note: This letter, to David Whiting, is in response to a letter from Whiting printed in the July 27 issue of this newspaper.

Your concerns regarding the recent chip seal preventive maintenance on Fairmount Avenue Southwest were forwarded to me for field review and consideration.

I have visited the location and consulted with appropriate staff members, as I understand that you are concerned about the effect of chip seal maintenance on bicyclists, as well as the speed humps that the community worked hard to implement last year.

Monorail could start here

West Seattle might get its part of the monorail before the downtown portion is built, and those gigantic support columns may be much smaller, says Cascadia Monorail Co.

Jim Devine, project manager for Cascadia, told the Seattle Monorail Project board of directors it would be quicker and easier to build the monorail in residential neighborhoods because there are fewer utility lines.

Miller seeks to steer city transportation

Exhibiting the no nonsense attitude she has displayed for the past nearly two decades on the Port of Seattle commission, Paige Miller was blunt and direct when she said she not only wants to end the Richard Conlin's time on the Seattle City Council but openly covets his job as chairman of the council's transportation committee.

"I've accomplished what I set out to do with the port and I want to take my skill, experience, tenacity, and persistence to the city where they really need some help, particularly on transportation issues which I know a lot about," Miller says.

Saturday morning, around 1:30, a man dressed only in a red spandex Speedo bathing suit jumped from some bushes and grabbed a woman in the alley in the 4700 block of California SW. He asked the woman if she was OK. She was able to run from him. Officers checked the area but found nothing.

A young woman returned to her parked car at the Junction. She found it in the middle of the alley, bumped up against another car. She tearfully told the officer that she had locked the car and left it in Park, but at it was now unlocked, in Drive, and contained garbage that was not hers.

Arbor Heights bested in swim league

Arbor Heights hosted the 2005 annual Seattle Summer Swim League Southern Division championship and were good hosts, letting just about everyone else beat them of teams from Olympic View, Normandy Park, Gregory Seahurst, Lakeridge, Kent, Marine Hills, and Twin Lakes.

"We took sixth," said coach Casey Murphy, down-headed a little.

But they had fun. And, really, when it gets down brass tacks, so to speak, isn't that really what it is all about?

But it is also about doing better than before, 'shaving off time,' as swim lingoists would call it.
