Consider Southwest? A bad idea

In the August 31 edition of the Ballard News-Tribune, readers were asked to consider the Southwest Airlines proposal to move its operations to Boeing Field. Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air also announced their intent to seek equal access to the airport if Southwest moves. I am an employee of Alaska Airlines and would like to offer my perspective on the Southwest proposal.

On the surface, the Southwest offer is cheap tickets, a close and convenient airport, a free airport terminal for the county, and more jobs for Boeing workers. It all sounds like a good deal.

Northwest Center celebrates 40th year

Thirty-nine years ago, Katie Dolan had trouble finding a school that would accept her son. He required special care because of his autism, a mental disorder that makes it difficult to interact socially.

Dolan, frustrated that her son and others like him couldn't get the care they needed, became one of the founding members of the Northwest Center in 1965, joining forces with four groups of parents to advocate for children with disabilities to ensure their rights to an education.

Mayor wants off monorail

After studying the latest financing plan for the monorail, John Haley, the new director, recommended continued pursuit of the project and called for completion of a contract by the end of December.

Two days later, Mayor Greg Nickels drew quite a different conclusion.

"The financing plan presented to me is not prudent," Nickels said in a statement last Friday.

No train in vain for Stockmeyer

Chopping the cost of the Green Line from a ridiculed $11 billion to $7 billion puts the monorail project back into the "realm of reasonableness," said Cleve Stockmeyer, a member of the Seattle Monorail Project board of directors.

Two weeks ago, a hired consultant presented financial recommendations to the monorail board that could also reduce the time it would take to pay off the project, from 50 to 39 years.

The announcement in late June of the $11 billion financing proposal was a surprise to the monorail board and its release hadn't been approved, Stockme

Talented Beaver soccer team sees improvement

Despite continued improvement over the last two years, the Ballard Beavers women's soccer team will once again face stiff competition from the King Co. 4A league opponents.

The Ballard Beavers seem to have gotten more competitive in each of the last two years under the leadership of Head Coach Jim Harvey.

The year before Harvey arrived, the Beavers had scored only 16 goals in a 16 game season. They gave up 68 goals.

In 2003, the team improved, scoring 24 goals and only allowing 38.
