Gauging Hara's odds

Steve Clark

Lloyd Hara wants to become a Seattle Port Commissioner. He's running for the open seat, position 3, against Richard Berkowitz. Unlike his opponent, he doesn't have any experience in the maritime industry, but Hara isn't interested in swimming in the blue water of port politics. He's staying close to the shores of Pier 69. To Hara, the simple message is that Port of Seattle leadership has failed, and he'll fix it.

Watch where you park

Steve Clark

New parking kiosks and time limit zones will be deployed around downtown Ballard starting on November 14th.

The kiosks will replace existing coin meters. Stickers are affixed to vehicle windows to show proof of payment, which can be made with cash or credit cards. New short term parking zones will be used to create more short term, retail parking in the area.

The parking deployment follows a study the city conducted to gauge local sentiment to a change in area parking restrictions.

Ballard Goodwill sports community goods

Steve Clark

It's spooky what you can find at Goodwill. The Ballard store is crammed with 24,000 square feet of merchandise that has been, by and large, previously owned by people in the Ballard community. Every isle is a reflection of the neighborhood. By the looks of it, the neighborhood has always had a thing for Halloween.

The Ballard store celebrated Halloween Family Fun and Safety Celebration on Saturday, promoting their high season, which starts amid the Jack-O-Lantern candy buckets and the angel wing costume kits.

A new coarse record

I was feeling a little guilty and magnanimous last week. The weather was so inviting, I decided to play some golf and my conscience-driven inner voice urged me take Elsbeth along for the ride.

She was a little reluctant, as she had some laundry to do, and some ironing and some knitting, and some dusting.

A military mom gets orders from her son

Pat Curran, a Federal Way resident since 1989, doesn't send plain old cookies and socks to her son in Afghanistan.

Last month, Cpl. Jamie Curran, 21, of the Marine's 2/3 Echo Company stationed at Camp Blessing in eastern Afghanistan, sent his mom an email describing how the Afghani troops his company were training lacked backpacks.

Pat mobilized. She went to several Army & Navy stores to try to solicit donations, with no luck, and ended up buying 40 camouflaged semi-regulation packs at $29 each.

Federal Way PD cracks down on violence in day-long DV detail

Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick wants to send a message to abusers: Federal Way will not tolerate domestic violence.

Insisting that her department will do its part to recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Chief Kirkpatrick rallied her team of officers to round up abusers with outstanding warrants and put them in jail.

The 10-hour initiative, referred to as the DV Warrant Apprehension Emphasis, brought together three teams of eight officers and a lieutenant last Wednesday with the goal of serving some of the city's 500 outstanding family violence warrants.

Why I'm voting for Jeanne

To the editor:

City councilmember Jeanne Burbidge listens, cares and makes effective decisions. She evaluates all aspects of a situation, and then votes for an action which will benefit all residents of Federal Way. This has been her sensible and practical approach throughout her two terms on the City Council, and during her 2002-2003 term as mayor.

Such level-headed thinking is appreciated regionally, especially on the South County Area Transportation board where she served for eight years.
