Praise for the school board

To the editor:

Because of WASL academic achievement results, Federal Way Public Schools was recently named as one of the top ten performing districts in the state by the Seattle Pacific University's education research center. This reflects credit on the School Board, school establishment, students, and parents.

The overriding priority of the School Board has been academic education. My many years of School Board observation leads me to the conclusion that the present Board is providing a leadership role not displayed by previous Boards.

Everybody is lying

Everybody is lying in the fight between doctors and lawyers over caps on medical malpractice. You can see this if you unravel the statements presented in two initiatives on the November ballot.

I-330 and I-336 are designed to counter each other. I-330 is put forth on behalf of doctors. It caps at $350,000 the amount an injured patient can claim in pain and suffering damages.

Vehicle Break-ins keep Federal Way police busy

1. The resident of 3324 Southwest 323rd Street came into the station to report that her vehicle was broken into between 11:00 p.m. and 5 a.m. while parked in her driveway. She did not report the break-in at the time because she believed only a flashlight was taken, but since has discovered that an old Federal Credit Union checkbook was stolen. The thief used the checkbook to write two fraudulent checks, totaling $1,582, against the account.

2. A man notified Federal Way police reported that some of his property was stolen from a vehicle he was borrowing from a friend.

Publisher

If you have been paying attention to what has been happening to Burien in the last three years you have to be impressed.

Battered by competition from the retail boom in Tukwila that began with Southcenter 30 years ago, Burien also has been hammered and decimated by a rampaging airport, which ate up hundreds of homes and apartments plus a bunch of lively businesses where once upon a time we imagined there might be another Bellevue.

But like a pesky little terrier, Burien refused to dry up and blow away.

Old allies differ on Southwest move

Proposals by Southwest and Alaska airlines to move flights from Sea-Tac International Airport to Boeing Field have split former allies in the long battle over the third runway.

Tukwila city leaders, who fear increased noise and traffic, are opposing the requests, while officials from former fellow Airport Communities Coalition (ACC) member Des Moines are remaining neutral.

Des Moines and Burien, another ex-ACC member, are developing economic development projects around the airport in partnership with the Port of Seattle, operators of the Sea-Tac airport.
