Plane crash remembered

A piece of local history

After a quick Thanksgiving trip to Portland, we returned to open our Highline Times and there was the write up of the plane crash in our Boulevard Park neighborhood exactly 50 years ago.

My husband said, “Remember that?” And I exclaimed, “I certainly do.”

We were sleeping in the back bedroom of our house when I woke up and saw flames through the window. I yelled, “Jack! Wake up!

Assistance appreciated

On Dec. 1, my husband, Gilbert K. Schaller, fell onto the floor while I was attempting to put him into his wheelchair.

Since my neighbors were not available to help me, I called 9-1-1. Two firefighters (Ryan Anderson and Ross Britt) from the Burien Fire Department came to my rescue.

I want to thank them and to remind everyone how lucky we are to have such professionals in the Burien Fire Department.

'In Her Shoes' is a patient movie

Sometimes, God actually is found in the details. And sometimes, so are the makings of a good story.

Taken in its broad strokes, "In Her Shoes" promises to be a movie with no surprises up its sleeve. The set-up is something we've all seen before and the end is never in much doubt. Rose Feller (Toni Collette) is a mousy lawyer who makes up for her lousy romantic life by throwing herself into her work and periodically adding to a really great shoe collection that she never seems to wear.

You write it, we print it

The big wave going through the avant-garde world of Internet publishing these days is the old but suddenly newly found idea of publishing readers' writings on everything from a child's football game to latest happenings in a community. It already exists right here, on these pages.

Newspapers have published letters from its readers for decades. Most edit the content, sometimes reducing a long letter to a few central phrases.

Maximize charity donation requests

I don't own a business in the Junction but do work in one three days a week. On average this small business receives a minimum of two to three requests for donations each week.

That makes 150-200 yearly requests. I am constantly amazed by how many people come in requesting something for next week and aren't prepared to provide any information about the worthiness of their event.

May I offer some hints on how to increase the chance that your donation request will be honored?

Show the business that you understand and appreciate its goals.

Go to the polls

November General Election results have now been certified by the King County Elections Department.

If you voted an "absentee" ballot, then there is no way to be certain it was tallied unless you phone 296-VOTE.

If you voted at the polls, then you should be pleased to know that no human hand intervened between your marking of your paper ballot and its tally as reported on the 11 o'clock news that night. Its processing also did not cost you or King County a postage stamp nor the massive mailing and counting operation that absentee ballots demand.

Candidate to remain active

Now that all ballots have been counted, I wish to express that great privilege it was to have offered my voice to at least 12,442 voters. Thank you voters and thank you to our founders who placed God-given and thus unalienable individual rights at the foundation of our governments.

Because these rights are so fundamental to liberty and peace. I will continue to advocate for owners of property and future owners of property, irrespective of political boundaries.

Enjoys Jerry's View

I want to say how very much I enjoy "Jerry's View," particularly the way you talk about your relationship with your wife.

It throws into sharp contrast Steve Johnston's "Sunday Punch," which runs in the Seattle Times' Pacific Northwest magazine. I had to give up reading it because he insists on referring to his wife as "the Truly Unpleasant Mrs.
