My steelheading buddy

One cold winter day my old pal, Burien builder Dave Stamborsky and I were searching for a likely place to catch a steelhead. I convinced him we should try the Hamma Hamma on the Olympic peninsula.

It's a short, narrow little stream that flows out of the mountains and dumps into Hood Canal. I had fished it before, but never in the winter. Since it was too small to float, we decided to hike it up to the famous Blue Hole, where I had caught summer run fish before.

Driver's hope for freedom goes up in smoke

1. After a routine traffic stop near the New Horizon Motel on the 33100 block of Pacific Highway South, Federal Way officers arrested the driver of a cream colored 1979 Oldsmobile for operating his vehicle without a license. The police also nabbed him for possessing less than 40 grams of marijuana.

Fifteen minutes earlier, officers nailed another driver in the same location for driving with a suspended license, third degree. That man owns a blue 1997 Ford and was cited and arrested for the offense.

Retreat yields decisions about annexations, public safety

A soft but steady rain bathed the landscaped gardens around the Dumas Bay Center and lent a somber tone to the proceedings within Banquet Room #3.

Inside, local government was taking its job seriously.

On Saturday, January 28, the city council, along with the mayor, interim city manager, and seven department heads, gathered for an all-day strategic planning retreat.

Discover Burien backed

To those who insist on living in the past: Can’t we spend our energies on the present and the future of Burien? To letter writer Bob Pierce, there are some organizations that have served their usefulness - the Burien Improvement District for one, and of course the Merchants of Burien.

Actually, the Merchants of Burien’s demise began at the very outset with the use of an acronym, “MOB,” and a flyer with the silhouette of a gun.
