Willa M. Schmeer

Willa M. Schmeer died in Milwaukie, Ore., Saturday, March 11, as a result of complications from a fall which occurred Feb. 15. She was 87.

Willa M. Thompson was born Oct. 12, 1918, in Hillsboro, Ore. She attended Roosevelt High School for two years before transferring to Commerce High School in Portland, graduating in 1938. She married Gordon R. Schmeer in Portland in 1941 and they had three children. In 1957 they moved to Normandy Park, where she worked in the home and raised her family. Her children attended Highline and Mt. Rainier high schools.

Theresa A. Pavone

Theresa was born Sept. 16, 1919, in Seattle to Louis and Anna Minotto. She died March 13, 2006, in Burien at the age of 86.

She attended Highline High School. She met and then nine months later married Louis Pavone on May 3, 1947. Theresa was a packer for Mission, and Majoret. She also worked for Associated Food Industry. She enjoyed taking care of her home and raising her family, which included her son Steven.

Theresa is survived by her husband of 58 years, Louis Pavone of Seattle, and son Steven Pavone of Burien.

Services will be private at a later date.

Joshua Eugene Duckworth

April 10, 1974-March 13, 2006

Beloved son of Kathy and Steve Edgell and Bill and Anita Duckworth. Josh graduated from Evergreen College in 1999 with a degree in fine arts. He was an accomplished artist who worked into the wee hours on his art projects. His favorite medium was making large sculptures out of scavenged metal parts and pieces. Josh also made and played the Australian instrument known as the didgeridoo. Josh lived life to the fullest; he was ready to try anything. Josh loved nature, from the smallest flower to the massive trees of the Northwest.

Beatrice Bohon

Beatrice (Sherry) Bohon, 103, of Ballard, Washington passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, March 1, 2006. She was born on July 5, 1902 in Crowder, Missouri and moved to Seattle, Washington in 1923.

Beatrice Sherry married Warren E. Bohon on May 24, 1923 and raised four children. Beatrice lived in her present Ballard home for 68 years.

Beatrice is preceded in death by her daughter, Vivian Lorraine Bohon and husband, Warren E. Bohon and has one surviving brother, Thurman Sherry of Cheyenne, Wyoming. She is survived by her four children, daughter Barbara J.

Tough paperboy now avid Elk and the vacation from Hell

Elsbeth and I were having lunch at the Elks Lodge recently when we met Leo Macias. Leo used to work for us when he was 10 years old delivering papers on his White Center News paper route.

That was years ago but he remembers it well. His route was on the city side of White Center and he had about 55 customers. He was a small kid in a tough neighborhood but he had a lot of spunk.

One day he was accosted by the town bully while delivering his papers.

Highline school bond passing

The $148 million Highline school bond was passing Tuesday night with a 63.61 percent yes vote following a count of all poll votes and early absentee ballots.

The bond garnered approval from 9777 voters with 5593 (36.39 percent) voting to reject the measure.

Des Moines worried about crime

Last summer, Des Moines Mayor Bob Sheckler convened the Des Moines Leadership Summit to chart a course for the city’s future.

Last week, city council members heard back from summit task force participants who spent the intervening months answering two questions posed by the mayor:

What is my organization doing now that makes Des Moines a better place to live?

And what would I like to see happen in the future to make Des Moines a better place to live?
