Burien violent crime up slightly

Murder, forcible rape and aggravated assault -- major crimes that have a large affect on a community -- increased by only 1.5 percent last year, the Burien City Council was told April 10.

Even with a slight increase in crime locally, this is a “remarkable accomplishment,” Burien Police Chief Scott Kimerer noted during his presentation of the 2005 police report.

This, Kimerer said, is because crime rates in surrounding locales went up considerably at the same time.

The crime rate in SeaTac went up almost 26 percent in 2005, and nearly 14 percent in t

New trail ideas considered

After a dispute over whether to build a trail through the Orchard Street Ravine or a self-contained loop trail, Seattle Parks and Recreation decided to have both.

The department intends to hire an outside consulting firm to determine whether 36th or 38th avenue would be better suited as a connection for a through trail at the higher northern side of the ravine.

Parks and Recreation previously recommended against cutting a trail from one side of the ravine to the other because of concerns about the ravine's steep slope.

Megawatt's Cunningham to leave top post

Mary Ellen Cunningham realizes her baby has grown into an inquisitive 2-year-old so it's time for mom to step back and let the offspring wander beyond her reach.

Cunningham is confident Megawatt, the nonprofit organization she founded, can make it on its own now, so she is stepping down as director. A search is underway for her successor and about 20 people have applied.

"I'm not leaving," Cunningham said.

Strong-arm robberies rise

On Wednesday, a woman was walking home just after midnight in the 5600 block of California SW, when a man came up from behind and grabbed her purse. He jerked it from her shoulder, knocking her down some cement steps. The suspect ran southbound and possibly turned onto SW Juneau. He is a black male in his 20s, and wore a black rag on his head, a gray sweatshirt with hood and gray sweatpants.

Late Wednesday evening, a similar purse snatching took place a California SW and SW Findlay, as a woman and her male friend walked southbound.

Ride 'Between the Nox'

Daffodils poke their heads up to say hello. Happy dogs fly through the air after Frisbees. And brave souls reveal bare legs, donning shorts for the first time in what seems likes years. Spring has sprung on the Westside and it's that time of year to take advantage of the daylight and dive into something new.

One way to appreciate longer days and better weather is to dust off your bike (or buy a new one) and go for a pre-sunset spin. And now, thanks to Dennis Grace and Cascade Bicycle Club, West Seattleites have their very own ride to enjoy every Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
