Children and More 'Girl Power' offers time with 'tweens'

When my daughter was just a toddler, I remember leaving her at the childcare in the morning. She would cry every time, like clockwork, as I walked out feeling horrible. I remember vividly how her face would light up when I came back later. That's really all she needed - me nearby.

So when do mothers and daughters go from being so clearly and wonderfully attached into the "dark years" when they hate each other?

A friend of mine recently told me about her 14-year old's "difficult years." One day her daughter simply stopped talking to her.

At The Admiral 'Match Point' plot in desperate need

I think Woody Allen has finally pulled it off; he's transformed himself into the Jed Clampett of New York's intellectual scene. If Allen's latest movie, "Match Point," accomplishes anything it's to serve as a cautionary tale about the hemophilial effects of cultural inbreeding on talent. The art galleries of Manhattan may not be as far removed from Appalachia as we once thought.

"Match Point" starts out as a nifty little story about the short-circuiting of ambition by lust.

White Center police Park Lake man killed in random shooting

Editor's Note: We begin a monthly report on law enforcement activities in the North Highline area written by White Center store front Deputy Sheriff Steve Cox.

Vann Veth was shot and killed in his apartment at Park Lake Homes on the morning of March 11. About 20 minutes before the murder, shots were fired at the house at 10733 Myers Way. No one was hit at the Myers Way shooting. Both shootings are probably connected but we cannot confirm that at this point.

Send them back

Those illegal immigrants: just who do they think they are? They sneak over the boarder illegally and then try to tell us what to do. I, never in all my life, have heard of such a thing. Bold, greedy, belligerent, self-sucking, from free health-care, so-called low-income housing, and all the other free goodies they can get; and at our expense.

Check out the church parking lots on Sundays you won't see any Junkers, just big fancy cars, vans, and SUV's.

Value of Toastmasters

They say that the only thing that people fear more than death is public speaking - which means most people would rather die than give a eulogy. But for some of us, public speaking is an ongoing, enjoyable and very personal challenge. Both the people and the environment contribute to our experience.

For more than 50 years, West Seattle Earlybirds Toastmasters have met to give speeches on a weekly basis. Some of our members, like Vic Groening and Bob Confer, have done this for most of those 50 years. Others, like Larry Puffert, have attended regularly for nearly two decades.

Police gather at Alki

This is about Rebekah Schilperoort's article this week (April 12).

Being an early morning walker along Alki, I would like Lieutenant Paulsen to explain why anywhere from three to six police cars are parked at Tully's most mornings from 30 to 60 minutes. Seems like they all do not have to take a coffee break at the same time. When I have mentioned it to an officer all I got was a nod as he walked in to Tully's.

I walk about 5:15 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Beware of this guy

This crime was so petty, I'm guessing it's not going to make it into the crime report (my favorite part of your paper).

I'm hoping you'll print my little story so that others will learn from my mistake.

Today I had 10 yards of compost delivered to our house - incidentally, the driver was incredible; he backed a 30 foot truck onto our lot, avoiding my flowers with six inches to spare. I can barely park my station wagon.

Teaching Qur'an helps understand Muslims

I have been teaching the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam, in West Seattle at our church, over the past three years. It's a four week class wherein a schedule is provided to help the students read straight through the entire Qur'an in a brief time.

Ever since September 11, 2001, people have wondered if the Qur'an teaches Muslims to kill people they disagree with. This is because the leader of those 9/11 terrorists, Mohamed Atta, included in his directions to the other 18 terrorists, some 20 quotes from the Qur'an to inspire their dastardly deeds.
