Garbage site argued

If Georgetown residents and business owners succeed in their lobbying effort to get Georgetown off the list as a possible site for the city's future garbage transfer facility, planners could reconsider putting it near the West Seattle Bridge.

Seattle Public Utilities completed a long study of four possible sites for a large, enclosed building where garbage trucks would deliver their loads.

Council disregards citizens

Whose drum beat is the Burien City Council marching to? It certainly is not the residents of Burien because by the council's own admission they are disappointed with the citizen response they have received.

The council has decided not to go after an advisory vote because they do not think the residents are capable of understanding the annexation data. Some of the council members say they are under intense pressure. From whom?

Hanging around Burien, you meet nicest people

Meet Ruby Leonard Spengler.

This popular pioneer citizen of the Highline area is doing fine in spite of some health setbacks, and still has her winning smile.

Meet Camella Kono

She is surgery coordinator for three physicians in the Three Tree Medical Building next door to Highline Medical Center.

When Elsbeth and I went to schedule a date for her hip replacement by Dr. Barronian, I was struck by Konos' curly black hair so I asked if she slept on a scrub board.

She said, laughing, "No, it is natural.

Recalling an 'Opie' childhood

How do I pick out a few mental snapshots from a lifetime of memories?

That was my dilemma on a Saturday last month as I helped volunteers install playground equipment at Burien's new Mathison Park.

I was there because that is where I grew up.

The volunteers were amazing as they lugged heavy pieces and expertly bolted them together. The completed "Big Toy" was a colorful sight to behold with slides and climbing walls. (As a kid, we had climbing structures, too.

Nationals launch bombs against West Seattle

Bombs away!

The South Highline National Nationals didn't have one home run, but little explosions more than made up for a '"master blaster" as the 13-15 year old boys beat West Seattle, 20-4, in a 10-run rule shortened five-inning game played Wednesday eve at Rainier Beach Playfield.

"I think this was the highest scoring game of the tournament," said Ron Dickneite, the Nationals' second-year manager who watched his boys slap silly the ball 20 times in just five innings of play.

Winning means the Nationals played for the championship Saturday (after press time)

Seahurst sewage-line leak closes park for two days

Seahurst Park's north beach was closed for almost 48 hours last week after a leak in a nearby sewage line was discovered.

The leak was discovered by a citizen who smelled "sewage-like" odors and contacted the Burien Parks and Recreation Department around 5 p.m. June 20.

City officials alerted the Southwest Suburban Sewer District (SWSSD), which responded promptly.
