Des Moines lawmakers voice Redondo parking concerns

The Des Moines City Council unanimously approved on June 22 a permit that allows Highline Community College to take the next step in rebuilding the Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST).

But council members also expressed concerns about parking at Redondo that could arise with the new center.

Councilwoman Susan White was absent.

The college wants to tear down the existing MaST center and build a new facility complete with an aquarium, new equipment and a classroom.

Winning Quinto ticket no reason to quit jobs

Tyrone Curry, a Highline School District employee for 30 years who works four jobs, now can add "Lottery Millionaire" to his resume.

The 55-year-old Evergreen High School custodian is Washington's latest millionaire -winning $3.4 million with a Quinto ticket in the June 17 drawing.

Tyrone's wife, Michele, was the first to discover the win.

The following Monday morning, Michele stopped in the Zip Mart where the ticket was purchased, and the clerk told her to check it.

Marine back to lead parade

As a veteran of three wars, retired Sgt. Maj. Jack Jaunal has racked up 33 years of military service and a stack of 22 awards that begin with a Purple Heart Medal.

Jaunal, who will preside as grand marshal over Burien's Fourth of July Parade (see separate story on Page 1) was prompted by World War II to enter the military as a teenager.

Two decades later, he worked in Burien as a Marine recruiter from 1964-67.

Oil alternative sought by Burien accountant

Though many drivers seem to be helpless in the fight against rising gas prices, one local tax advisor is helping create a company that could bring some change at the pumps.

Ian Briscoe, who owns a tax preparation business in Burien, is the chief financial officer of a new company that aims to make bio-diesel more of a regional product.

By localizing bio-diesel production, the company, Planetary Fuels, plans to reduce transportation costs that commonly cut into profit margins in the current alternative fuel industry.

Burien City Council members said last week they do not support annexing the entire North Highline unincorporated area.

The lawmakers' views were aired during a special meeting June 19 on the potential impacts that an annexation would have on Burien.
