King Street would be downtown route

New details about the Alaskan Way tunnel project indicate West Seattleites would be able to access north and south-oriented downtown streets from a King Street exit, and east-west streets from ground-level Alaskan Way.

These and other West Seattle-related details emerged during a joint meeting of the Southwest and Delridge Neighborhoods district councils last week.

Building a tunnel with its waterside wall doubling as a new seawall is the preferred alternative of the Seattle and Washington State departments of transportation.

Police defend long bridge closure

The West Seattle Bridge was closed for about eight hours last Thursday while police investigated an accident scene in which three people died, resulting in a difficult morning commute for West Seattle drivers. The westbound lanes of the bridge were opened a few hours sooner than the eastbound side.

Police said they received numerous inquiries on why collision and its aftermath required that portions of the bridge be closed to traffic for several hours, affecting thousands of drivers.

Washington State Ferries is expecting to be busy this July 4th as many locals and tourists attend the various fireworks displays around the Sound.

White Center police

Area crime way down

By Steve Cox

For the most part the Center was quiet for the month of May. We did have a murder. In that case, a father apparently got angry with his three month old child and hit and/or shook the baby so hard that the baby died. The father was arrested.

BB gun shootings

In the last two months we have had a rash of BB gun shootings. In most, if not all, of the cases the windows of parked cars were shot out. There have been at least 30 such shootings in the White Center and Burien area.

Rock-a-bye baby

A local woman called it quits with her boyfriend after she looked in her child's diaper bag and found a scale (used for weighing drugs) inside. But wait, there's more: Inside the container of powdered infant formula she found a bag of rock cocaine.

On Saturday evening, when her ex-boyfriend began to act paranoid and exhibited other odd behavior, a woman tried to take him to Harborview for help. But he jumped from the car and ran into the Admiral Safeway parking lot.

Fred Schultze is here

In reply to the question in your paper (June 14) "Fred Schultze." where are you?

I have to say I am still around, a little more tired, after all 96 1/2 is not like 46 1/2 or so. Sometimes the weather kept me from going to Lincoln Park in the morning and I went around noon, and sometimes it was just pure laziness.

I promise to do better this summer and hope to see all my park-friends again. I miss them all.
