Swedish adds TCU to closures

Swedish Medical Center's Board of Trustees has voted to close the 30-bed Transitional Care Unit (TCU) at its Ballard campus to help quell an annual company loss of about $5 million for the last several years.

Crown Hill park on hold

The Parks & Recreation Department has put on hold a project to develop Crown Hill School's open area into a public park. The project is part of the Pro Parks Levy, and is currently in the planning phase.

After holding two public meetings to discuss design options with the community, Parks postponed the third and final public planning meeting. The meeting had originally been scheduled for May, but was postponed until the fall of 2006.

Parks is waiting for the Seattle School District to decide what it wants to do with the property.

Last Call Seattle for designated drivers

Ballard Beavers annual football camp

Summer is just around the corner and that means it's time for the Seventh Annual Ballard Youth Football Camp from June 12 to 16 at Ballard High School.

The camp is for youngsters ages seven to 14 and takes place each day from 3:45-5:30 p.m.

Coaches from Ballard High will work directly with participants who will learn the basics of blocking, tackling, passing, catching, kicking and other techniques in a safe, non-contact environment.

The fundamental offensive and defensive drills used by the Beavers will be taught.

Clarence "Pete" Pedersen

Clarence E. Pedersen was born on June 22, 1914 and died May 22, 2006 in Seattle. He was the son of Edward and Inga Pedersen and brother to Edel Fosterwld and Irene Bulman (both deceased). A life long member of Ballard First Lutheran Church.

He attended Webster Grammar School, Ballard High School and later Navy Gunnery School. At the age of 17 he ventured to Bristol Bay, Alaska on steamships to deckhand on tenders from 1931-1933. He retired in 1973 from the U.S. Coast Guard and Geodetic Survey (National Ocean Service).

Former couple's squabble leads to arrest

1. A man drove his maroon 1993 Ford to a team of Federal Way officers and reported a theft involving another person, his ex-partner. After taking a statement from him, the police determined that the theft was a civil matter between the two parties and the man was advised on his rights to proceed. Upon running his name through the system, officers determined that the suspect was driving with a suspended license. After the police left the scene, the man called 911 and falsely reported that the other suspect shot a gun at him.
