School police on budget chopping block

Police officers could be pulled out of three Highline high schools in January if the school district cannot reach agreement with Burien, SeaTac and King County on funding.

Superintendent John Welch has recommended that funding for school resource officers (SROs) be cut from the district's budget.

The district faces a $3.1 million general budget shortfall.

At a June 14 study session, interim budget director Barb Piguet upped the estimate on how much could be saved by eliminating the positions staffed by King County Sheriff's deputies at Highline, Tyee and E

In Transition - What is 'Peace with Justice?'

Recently my youth group hosted the church service for my church, Tibbetts United Methodist. I was unable to attend the actual service, but it was requested that I be one of three people to write a five-minute reflection on "Peace with Justice." I agreed.

However, when I finally laid my fingers on the keyboard and tried to pin down just what I was supposed to write, I began to understand that neither peace nor justice are - and have not been for a long time - absolute in that they cannot be laid down in concrete terms.

New Start reactions were'Not in My Backyard'

Thank you for your coverage of the New Start Youth Program moving to Salmon Creek Elementary School. I attended the community meeting (June 6) with students and staff from New Start, Highline School District, King County Work Training Program and residents from the Salmon Creek neighborhood.

As neighborhoods change and new programs, businesses, or schools are located in the area, it's very important for residents to be informed and involved.

Consider Pathfinder ramifications of no move

I felt it necessary to respond to the extensive coverage the West Seattle Herald gave the "plight" of Pathfinder in the June 7 edition. I find the parental opposition and some of their comments to be highly ironic and in contradiction to the stated purpose of their school and out of alignment with the District vision for restructuring.

The Pathfinder community objects to the Boren building because it is too large and unsuitable for their needs.

Boren will be the end of Pathfinder

Over the years, the Boren school building is not appropriate for Pathfinder school for so many reasons I can not even begin to list them.

It has been a transitional location over the last few years for West Seattle High School, Madison Middle School and Cleveland High School. While I have felt badly for those students, that had to attend school in that building, it was OK because of the fact that it was temporary.

Moving Pathfinder to this building is not appropriate for a small, alternative K-8 school.

Good Alki news

I would like to celebrate a potential loss that turned into an effort of compassion on Alki Beach. I was running on the beach with my son, Kailas, one morning, and stopped at one of the outdoor bathrooms. Being lost in thought, I mistakenly left my purse with my keys in the bathroom. About an hour later, realizing my loss, I ran to the bathroom to see if my purse was still in that location.

How dare you, Seattle?

Over 60 years ago a remarkable generation of Americans, our friends, fathers, mothers, grandparents, and our youth joined forces during World War ll. Now 59 years later, the City of Seattle is planning to desecrate a war memorial dedicated to our youth who gave their lives fighting for our freedoms.

High School Memorial Stadium was dedicated Thanksgiving Day l947 to honor this remarkable generation.

How soon we forget the sacrifices our youth made going into war directly out of Seattle schools. How dare you.
