Students produce award

Ballard High School students have the talent to produce videos and they are receiving the recognition for the quality of their work.

Three video productions by Ballard students won awards in the 30th Annual Young People’s Film and Video Festival organized by the Northwest Film Center in Portland on July 16.

“They pick the work that is best and put it in a showcase,” said teacher Matt Lawrence.

Group opposes annexation

A new political action committee was organized recently to oppose annexation by Burien of part or all of the North Highline unincorporated area.

Burien Residents Against Annexation also collected some 1,200 signatures in two weeks to petition the city council not to proceed with annexation.

Those petitions, which were submitted to the city council on July 17, declared, "We the undersigned are opposed to any form of annexation of North Highline by Burien."

Jack Thompson's summer sports camp was held recently at Evergreen High School in White Center. The caption with a photograph of some of the 300 camp participants, published in the July 12 Times/News, gave the wrong location. Also, pictured holding the football before snapping it was Robbie Tobek, starting center of the Seattle Seahawks. The Times/News regrets the errors and any confusion they may have caused

Teen-ager arrested for

shoplifting at Safeway

A 15-year-old boy was arrested after he was caught stealing and struggling with store security officers.

On July 14 around 6 p.m., a security officer at Safeway in the 21400 block of Pacific Highway S. watched as the boy took three DVDs and walked past the checkout lines and out the door.

When he tried to apprehend the boy, the officer was elbowed in the ribs.

Pro instruction offered

Local tennis professional Steve Walters again offers area tennis lessons at outdoor locations this summer. Walters, certifed Pro 1 by the United States Professional Tennis Association since 1986, has coached at some of the world's top tennis resorts and academies in Florida, Caifornia, Texas and Canada. Also he traveled on the men's professional tour, including the 1988 U.S. Open, as a traveling coach for world-ranked pros and nationally-ranked juniors.
