Ella Ree Depue

Ella Ree Depue was born March 28, 1920, in Mason City, Ill., and died August 23, 2006, in Burien, at the age of 86.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1993.

Ella Ree is survived by her daughters Georgia Birchler and husband Gary, Mary Palzer, and Willa Roddy and husband Jim; sister Ruby Imig; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Ella Ree grew up in Illinois where she became a beautician. She married Bill in 1943, and they moved to Seattle soon thereafter, where they raised their three daughters.

Nettie "Natasha" Grenkavich

Born March 9, 1917 in Seattle, Washington to Andrew and Lucia Fasevich. Passed away peacefully on August 9, 2006. She was a graduate of Beacon Hill Grade School, Franklin High School (Class of '35), and Wilson Business College. Preceded in death by her husband Alex, whom she was married to for 56 years. She and her husband owned and operated High Point Shoe Repair, in West Seattle, for 35 years. She is survived by her sons, Philip (Jeny), of CA and Robert Sr.

1921 Edwin Earl Mason 2006

Ed was taken to his eternal rest on August 22, 2006, after a short stay at Swedish Hospital. He was a lifelong West Seattle resident, graduate of West Seattle High School and Kings Point Academy, New York. He served in the Merchant Marine during WWII. Ed retired after 33 years at General Steamship.

John F. Scully

John F. Scully, age 78 was born in Beverly, Massachusetts and passed away after a short illness. John married Shirley Talbert in September 1982. He was a wonderful, thoughtful father, husband, and an exceptional son-in-law. His mother-in-law Ethel Neal, who recently preceded John in death, was well taken care of by him. He resided in West Seattle for more than 30 years. John sailed for 43 years into various ports around the world as a merchant seaman. The last 15 he employed by Sea Land.

26 years ago, Weyerhaeuser employees and volunteers began planting, each by hand, 18 million tree seedlings in the rich mantle of ash spewed from Mount Saint Helens.

Those conifer seedlings stand today over 75 feet tall, thanks, ironically, to the weed-discouraging and water-retaining ash mulch.

This month, a new house in Federal Way built in part from blast zone lumber, will become the home to five.

Weyerhaeuser, the largest private landowner in the area around the volcano, sustained heavy losses during the explosion in May of 1980.

Giving tech support a new name

"This is going to change how people take care of their computers," said Scott LeBorious, a computer systems expert, as he thumbed the keypad on his cell phone in anticipation of a sales call.

LeBorious works for a new Federal Way company called Honest John, which provides complete computer systems support and management for the entire gamut of technology users, from soccer moms to CEOs.

Des Moines Library seeks funds for art

Patrons of the Des Moines Library and community members are invited to join in fundraising fun as efforts get underway to bring a sculpture to the library grounds.

During the past year, a citizens advisory committee appointed by the Des Moines/Woodmont Library Advisory Board has studied the feasibility of commissioning and installing artwork on library grounds.

Songbirds wanted for open rehearsals next month

Calling all singers.

Choral Sounds Northwest wants you.

An 80-member choral group based in Burien, Choral Sounds will hold an open rehearsal on Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, 1028 S.W. 128th St.

"We are looking for people who sang in junior high, senior high or college choirs or a glee club and now miss it," said marketing director Paul Bauer.

"There is a pool of people out there who want to sing.

Maplewild repairs get national attention

The city of Burien's Maplewild Avenue Southwest repair project has received national recognition as a Public Works Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association (APWA).

This prestigious award salutes the city's management of the earthquake-repair project.

"Your selection puts you in a very elite group of winners and APWA is proud to have you and your partners on this project epitomize the public works profession," the association stated in a letter that congratulated Burien Public Works Director Stephen Clark.
