Get down to folk sounds on Delridge

Was that the sound of strings-a-strummin'? And I thought I just heard a double-neck guitjo. Some unique sounds are going down on Delridge. And this is in addition to the already happenin' scene just down the street at the Skylark.

For a neighborhood that used to seem somewhat quiet when it came to live music, now the hills are alive with the sound of it.

Jerry's View - Just a kid again

The other day we were in Costco getting my hearing aid repaired when an old guy walked up and made me feel like a kid again.

He said he was 90 and did not have a cane. He said he had never smoked or drank but when I asked if he still chased women his rheumy eyes lit up like beacons on a foggy night and he grinned.

He never did explain the leering but I assumed his prancing goat days were just a memory. Then his wife showed up and he stopped drooling. When you grow too old to . . .

Trainer's Corner - Keep track of your calories

Should you count your calories? Should you weigh yourself once a week or even once a day?

We live in a land of plenty where snacks and large portion sizes are abundant. Bagels and sodas are three to four times bigger than they were decades ago and calories and pounds add up quicker than we want to admit.

While the high protein and fiber diets are very satisfying these days, portion sizes are too big to the point of gluttony.

The answer is yes. Count calories by rounding off to the nearest hundred and it's effortless. Study package labels.

My West Seattle - A Metronatural kinda guy

I'm a Metronatural kinda guy. But it took me years to achieve Metronaturalness; a state of mind and body that allows your natural-self to come out in the city and your city-self to feel comfortable outdoors. When nature calls downtown, Metronaturalists - we like to call ourselves MN'ers - have no compunction stepping into an alley to take care of business. Likewise, when in the forest, MN'ers bring along all the comforts of home in their 60-foot Winnebago.

I hope the current 'Metronatural' campaign will bring more folks over to our way of life.

Op-Ed - Manhas says job was an 'honor'

This letter was sent to officials and staff of the Seattle School District upon the news that the superintendent would leave the district next summer.

By Raj Manhas

I am writing to let you know that the 2006-2007 school year will be my final one as superintendent. This has been a difficult personal decision for me to make because of the professional and personal satisfaction I have received while working on behalf of our students. I am grateful to you, the district's staff, and our school board for allowing me to serve as superintendent of Seattle Public Schools.
