The West Seattle Wildcats went to Bainbridge Island to once again face The Eastside Catholic Crusaders. It looked like the teams were evenly matched to begin the first game. Neither team won a point on their serve through a 4-4 tie when the Crusaders put together a run to take a 4-point lead.

Area grads help minors teams

Life in the professional baseball ranks took Federal Way-area graduates to the far corners of the United States in the summer of 2006.

Travis Ishikawa found himself going back-and-forth three times -- from the Class AA Connecticut Defenders to the Major League San Francisco Giants and back again and again and again.

Each time he was brought up he was substituting for first baseman Lance Neikro because of either injuries or personal reasons.

He left a good impression while with the parent club, hitting .292 (7-for-21) with three doubles, one triple, one walk a

Thanks a latte

In a determined effort that lasted six months, Starbucks employees from all nine of the Federal Way district's stores, from Hoyt Road to Des Moines, volunteered monthly at the food bank, served at the agency's annual Crab Feed, and on other projects such as toy and game drives, then turned in their hours to Starbucks Corporate Giving.

In July, their work was complete, and they had earned the $5,000 required to buy the Multi-Service Center Foodbank a new freezer.

Lessons in humility

The ad that I placed in the paper said, "Real nice tires, nearly new chrome wheels, come get them!"

I priced them at fifty percent of what I paid for them. Two days passed and the first call came in..."Hi, would you take a money order for the wheels and tires....and can you meet us at the Supermall? We can come down tomorrow!"

The voice sounded foreign and anxious and I got a funny feeling about it. I had read recently about money order fraud, and the request to meet at the mall seemed weird too.
