Earline's columns praised

I'm writing in regard to the many "Over the Fence" columns written by Earline Byers. I do look forward to reading our local newspaper; however, my favorite is Earline's "Over the Fence" columns. It's almost like going to your local hairdresser's shop and getting the latest news or happenings. The only difference is that Earline puts her heart and soul into each column and all of her information is "first hand and no Gossip!"

I especially loved the last two articles about our great Des Moines drugstore and Mrs.

Christmas really does matter but don't rush Thanksgiving

Oh yes, we need a little Christmas.

From the musical "Mame."

Tomorrow Americans pause to celebrate Thanksgiving-a historically significant observance rich in tradition with roots that date to the origins of our nation.

Despite its profound meaning, however, this holiday has been relegated to little more than a brief pause in the Christmas shopping frenzy already underway.

"When I was a boy," to borrow a phrase from my father, Thanksgiving marked the unofficial end of fall at our family-including grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins-gathered together

Frozen fan sees football frenzy

Over the course of many years, the Velling brothers-Joe, Mike and Jerry-took turns as quarterbacks for the Kennedy High School football team.

The three Velling girls-Marisa, Molly and Jennie-also brought home athletic laurels in less guy-type sports like swimming and tennis.

The trophy case in the family home looked like it should be in the hall of the school.

Father Roy Velling himself was a whizball pitcher for the Washington Huskies and his wife, Helen, who has two holes in one at golf, was a pretty fair country tennis player back in the days of Gussie Moran

Lindblad lands two wins at state

SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

There were a lot of good efforts to like from various Seamount League schools. Like the Highline Pirates' Beth Cate, a sophomore, who was second in the 500 freestyle. Like Rams divers Liz Nugent and Stephanie Chu, both making it to finals. And like the Kennedy Lancers, who had Brianne Lindblad win two events and overall helped the team take third at state for a best ever finish for them.

All this happened at the 3A WIAA Swimming and Diving State Championships at the King County Aquatic Center Nov.

Defense leads to JFK victory

Dynamite defense and big plays sparked John F. Kennedy to a return performance at the Class 3A state semifinals by virtue of a 21-6 domination of O'Dea Friday night at Seattle's Memorial Stadium.

Nolan Washington ignited the Lancers immediately by returning the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown to start JFK on its way.

"This is another step toward a state title," said senior Nate Williams, who led the running attack with 134 yards on 22 carries, including a touchdown jaunt of 30 yards.

Eliminated

By Gerardo Bolong

The weather outside was frightful, and the result was far from delightful for the John F. Kennedy Catholic High School girls soccer team on Saturday, November 11th.

In the wind-swept chill and rain at Highline Memorial Stadium in Burien, Skyline scored twice in the final 12 minutes to wash away Kennedy, 2-0, in a Class 3A state quarterfinal game.

By winning, the Spartans qualified for the semifinal round at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood.
