Editor practices hands-free journalism

When Jack Mayne walked into my office a while back he looked like he had something sticking out of his ear, so I asked him if he had been hit by a falling fir tree during the recent storm and did it enable him to hear the tree bark?

Or is that just a twig under his wig?

The eerie thing is a gizmo called a Bluetooth headset that allows him to drive a car and get cell phone calls while driving or while eating, bathing or shaving.

Jack is editor of both the West Seattle Herald and the Ballard News-Tribune so he gets a lot of phone calls from people mad at him.

Tunnel would impede economy

I have been a dedicated supporter of the viaduct ever since it opened some 50 years ago. An "unseen hand" placed $20 in my pocket as the viaduct saved me 30 minutes on that trip (with my truck earning $40 an hour in 1954 dollars). At the same time, I was treated to one of the world's most beautiful panoramic views of a natural deep-water seaport. It was a happy experience that I have aways remembered and commend to all the citizens of Seattle.

Be good to taxicab drivers

One has to use a taxicab sometimes, as there's no one to drive someone safely somewhere. I wish there could be more taxicabs available in West Seattle. I have wondered about the lack of taxicabs in West Seattle, if it is something to do with an unsolved tragic robbery crime of a taxicab driver, a husband/father with children, in West Seattle in December 1996.

I hope there can be more peacefulness to taxicab drivers, as they provide a service in every community.

City Council president collars issues for cops

This year posed some unexpected challenges. After being chosen for the two-year position of council president, I immediately faced hiring an outside investigator to review our department's management-employee relations. That the council president, among other duties, is essentially the director of the city's Legislative Department is not well-known. Several employees felt that they had been discriminated against. I took their concerns seriously.

Vandals ruin preschool play

With the persistence of erosion, vandals have been gradually destroying the outdoor play equipment at Arbor Heights Co-op Preschool since summer

At first the incidents seemed too insignificant to notify police. But then the front porch of a cedar playhouse was broken off, said Janet Jenness, a teacher at the preschool. Recently vandals returned to further damage the playhouse.

"They bashed in the siding," Jenness said.

Viaduct vote might come soon

Members of the Seattle City Council are ready to prepare a ballot measure asking city voters this spring if they are willing to pay extra for a waterfront tunnel or would they prefer a new elevated highway that could be paid for with existing financial commitments.

City Council President Nick Licata and Councilmember David Della jointly announced their goal to hold a citywide vote March 13.
