'A great run' ends in Burien

Many years from now, people will drive by what used to be 431 S.W. 150th St. in Burien, and vividly remember the classic restaurant that once was there.

You know, the one with the irresistible pot roast, comfort foods that soothed the palate and mouthwatering slices of fruit pie.

They may reminisce about one special occasion there, or give thanks for forever friends they met inside those cozy walls.

N. Highline council seeks Cox replacement

The North Highline Unincorporated Area Council is seeking applicants for an open at-large council position.

This vacancy was created when King County Deputy Sheriff Steve Cox, who also served as council chairman, was killed in the line of duty on Dec. 9.

Filing deadline is January 11. The selection of the candidate will be January 18 at the regular meeting of the council.

The North Highline Council meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month at the North Highline Fire District Office, 1243 S.W.

Windstorm review proposed

King County Councilman Dow Constantine, D-West Seattle, has requested a formal council review of the local response to December's massive windstorm.

Constantine wants local lawmakers to find what lessons can be learned from the natural disaster that left trees toppled, roads blocked and hundreds of thousands of King County households without electricity for days.

Nelson picked for cities post

Burien City Councilwoman Sally Nelson recently was appointed vice chair of the National League of Cities CityFutures Panel on Equity and Opportunity in 2007.

League president Bart Peterson, mayor of Indianapolis announced Nelson's appointment.

The CityFutures Panel on Equity and Opportunity works to identify emerging challenges resulting from inequalities based on race, economics, and demographics.

Local tennis professional Steve Walters again offers area tennis lessons at outdoor locations this summer. Walters, certifed Pro 1 by the United States Professional Tennis Association since 1986, has coached at some of the world's top tennis resorts and academies in Florida, Caifornia, Texas and Canada. Also he traveled on the men's professional tour, including the 1988 U.S. Open, as a traveling coach for world-ranked pros and nationally-ranked juniors.

Man hit, killed crossing

busy street in Tukwila

Michael Barnes, 55, who was hit by a sports utility vehicle while crossing Tukwila International Boulevard in the 14600 block, died of his injuries on Dec. 21.

The Tukwila resident's death was ruled an accident.

Tukwila police said he was not in the crosswalk when a Ford Explorer driven by a 60-year-old woman hit him at about 6:10 p.m. on Dec. 19. Investigators said the woman was not expected to be charged.
