Sewer system planned for Des Moines' North Hill neighborhood

Des Moines' North Hill is going to acquire a sewer system.

A petition in favor of sewer service required signatures from 51 percent of landowners within the improvement district to be successful.

The proposal had already received 51.6 percent approval before the city council considered the item, according to petition proponents.

But some area residents are contesting the petition and reporting an improper signature gathering process.

National Night Out events are planned

Highline-area residents will join citizens in thousands of communities nationwide on Tuesday, Aug. 7, for the 24th annual National Night Out crime-and-drug prevention event.

The Des Moines Police Department will kick off National Night Out a day early with the "Des Moines Walk Against Crime" on Aug. 6.

Participants are asked to assemble at the Public Works Building, 2255 S.

Valerie was born June 10, 1834, in Hoquiam to William and Lillian Sutherland. She graduated from Hoquiam High School, class of 1952. She was married in 1954 to her life love and best friend, William Ditty. She studied journalism at the University of Washington, and had a lifetime love of linguistics easily seen in her passion for crossword puzzles.

Val had a flair for art and was accomplished in metal sculpture.

SeaTac enters the ring on North Highline annexation

A fourth contender may jump into the ring in the seventh round of the North Highline annexation fight.

SeaTac lawmakers voted 4-3 on July 24 to consider annexing the Boulevard Park area as part of the city's comprehensive plan.

Voting to include annexation on the plan's final docket were Deputy Mayor Ralph Shape and councilmen Chris Wythe, Joe Brennan and Don DeHan.

Opposed were Mayor Gene Fisher, Councilman Tony Anderson and Councilwoman Terry Anderson.

The area that SeaTac may seek is much smaller than the entire North Highline unincorporated area
