Vote yes on Proposition 1

The residents of Federal Way and Des Moines are being asked to vote for Proposition 1 on August 21. This Lid Lift would allow South King Fire & Rescue to maintain the current levy rate of $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

What makes this election even more important is that a vote for this proposition will cover a six-year period from 2008 through 2013 instead of the one-year period. The present election system costs up to $200,000 each year. The savings on a six-year election period could be as much as $1 million in election cost alone.

Second annual cross-sound memorial swim set in Des Moines

Besides battling fatigue and the chill from 50-degree water, Justin Moser may have to watch out for bears while swimming the 2.3 miles between Des Moines and Maury Island on Aug. 25.

The route for the second annual Brent Rice Memorial Swim of the Sound between Des Moines Beach Park and Point Robinson is similar to one taken by a wayward bear recently.

Except the bear reversed the course, starting from the island and wading ashore a bit south at Saltwater State Park.

Homer Simpson clone nabbed in pastry heist

D'oh! At 2 a.m. Thursday, an officer was driving on the South Park Bridge, when she noticed donuts scattered all over the road. A delivery driver then ran into view and said that a man had hijacked his pastry truck. The driver wasn't sure which way the thief had gone, but the officer was able to follow the donut trail until it ended near Highway 599. A short time later, an officer driving on Delridge spotted the truck speeding through a construction zone with its headlights off. The driver finally stopped-on flattened tires-in the High Point neighborhood.

Thanks Medic One

On July 5th my mom was home alone and called 911 complaining of a bitter headache. Station 37 was dispatched promptly and transported her to Swedish. Because of their quick response my mom is now recovering from a aneurysm and is making improvements everyday.

We were told at the hospital that 50 percent to 60 percent of people who have aneurysms don't even make it to the hospital never mind be stable enough for surgery.

50,000 diapers

You might have noticed the glare of bright yellow around West Seattle in the last few weeks. It was WestSide Baby's Stuff the Bus time.

On Sunday July 29, we parked a big yellow school bus near the Farmers Market and spent the day collecting diapers and donations while children hopped into the driver's seat and honked the horn. We are thrilled to say that we collected more than 50,000 diapers for this event.
