Get a bite of Burien from BLT's Dracula

The 2007-2008 season for the Burien Little Theatre is starting off with a bang-or shall I say a fang? Or perhaps a "bite?"

OK, let's get the rest of the bad puns and snide comments out of the way first. "BLT has a show that you can really sink your teeth into." "This show is so good, you can take it to the bank ... the blood bank, that is." And, "BLT's stage has been turned into the Vampire State Building!"

Enough with the corny humor.

Burien and SeaTac trees to be cut back from lines

Seattle City Light crews will be trimming trees close to power lines in Burien and SeaTac this fall.

City Light officials are concerned because many trees have grown into power lines.

The trimming to maintain a 10-foot clearance around power lines will increase safety and reduce the likelihood of power outages, the agency noted last week.

Trees near power lines will be trimmed in the area surrounding 24th Avenue South between Interstate 5 and Sea-Tac International Airport, and west of the airport from State Route 518 in a southwestern direction to Sylvester Roa

Highline beats Tyee in girls soccer match

A nice reprieve from a losing week the week before made for a good Highline girls soccer team finish at the end of last week, capping off a three-game win streak by beating Tyee, 8-0, at Highline Stadium Thursday.

The other wins for the week were against Renton and a forfeit victory against Evergreen and now the Pirates are 3-3 this season, which also includes the losses to Kennedy and Mount Rainier to begin the season and a non-league loss to Garfield.

Spats and spittle

Four boys have been temporarily removed from a local elementary school after bringing a BB gun, two knives (one a switchblade), and a box cutter onto school grounds. And if that arsenal had proved insufficient, one of the boys allegedly told students his uncle could supply some guns. The 10- and 11-year-olds are apparently involved in a disagreement with other classmates.

Another disagreement between classmates led to a free-for-all at the Morgan Walgreens on Sunday. Employees told a girl to leave after she caused a disturbance with a teenage customer.

Cross Country - West Seattle takes 4 of top 10

Week number two of the Metro League cross country season brought runners from both Duwamish Peninsula high schools face-to-face at Upper Woodland on Friday.

In their first competitive encounter, West Seattle's Kyle MacDonald led all the way to win in 17:50, as Chief Sealth's fast-improving Bryce Rainwater finished second in 18:35 on a hilly 3-mile course. West Seattle runners took four of the top 10 places, with Jacob Nauss finishing third, Eli Swedlow ninth, and Lars Stromberg tenth.

Little League gets $100,000 grant

West Seattle Little League has been named recipient of the Boeing Mariners Care Athletic Field Grant.

The $100,000 grant, awarded annually to fund improvements at youth baseball and softball fields in Washington, will be presented during a pre-game ceremony on Friday, Sept. 28 during Fan Appreciation Night, when the Seattle Mariners take on the Texas Rangers.

This is the 23rd year the grant has been awarded, thanks to the generosity of The Boeing Co., a longtime Mariners corporate partner, and Mariners Care, the team's nonprofit foundation.
