Viaduct repairs to begin soon

The first of six projects to repair or replace more than half of the Alaskan Way Viaduct will start next month.

C.A. Carey Corporation has been awarded the contract to strengthen the viaduct between Columbia Street and Yesler Way where the structure has settled approximately five inches since the 2001 Nisqually earthquake. C.A. Carey submitted the lowest bid of $3.02 million. Work will begin in mid-October. No work will take place between Nov. 22 and Jan. 1 because of the holidays.

The foundation work is expected to take six months to complete.

Local seniors honoured

Five local seniors were honored on September 14 during the Foss Home and Village's Senior Appreciation Reception for their volunteer work.

The awardees included : Sid and Hilda Andrews (see Sept. 5, News-Tribune); Vivian Harlin, Bitterlake; Arlene Vanderklomp, Bitterlake; Relta Gray, Phinney; Jean Waldherr, Milton; Mary Lu Sansburn, Bellevue; and Polly Retzloff, Startup.

The event was held as part of Mayor Greg Nickels' Senior Appreciation Week from October 7-13. Phil Smart Jr., philanthropist and volunteer was the emcee.

Woodmont Elementary music program in need of keyboards

The Woodmont Elementary School Music Department is in need of piano keyboards to teach a unit of piano to sixth grade students. Any gently used keyboard of good musical quality would be taken in donation, preferably Casio or Yamaha brand, with a range of 60-88 keys.

Sixth grade students enrolled in the school's K-8 program will learn the basics of a general music curriculum.

Get a bite of Burien from Dracula

The 2007-2008 season for the Burien Little Theatre is starting off with a bang-or shall I say a fang? Or perhaps a "bite?"

OK, let's get the rest of the bad puns and snide comments out of the way first. "BLT has a show that you can really sink your teeth into." "This show is so good, you can take it to the bank ... the blood bank, that is." And, "BLT's stage has been turned into the Vampire State Building!"

Federal Way 37, Kentlake 14

Federal Way came away with a big win in the South Puget Sound League North Division opener for both teams.

The Falcons took control early with a 7-0 lead, but the Eagles came soaring back with 37 unanswered points.

Andre Barrington started the scoring binge, running for a 6-yard touchdown. Kelyn Rowe then scored his first point after touchdown in four attempts.

Aaron Broussard snagged a 38-yard pass from Justin Southern for the next touchdown, then Barrington scored on a 4-yard run.
