Local businesses, volunteers give back to Federal Way

As part of the annual United Way Day of Caring, 50 employees from WaMu and Microsoft Corporation volunteered at Multi-Service Center's Federal Way Food Bank, Friday, September 21, to help promote volunteerism and to learn first-hand the issues of poverty in the Federal Way area.

"The food bank was bustling with people. It was great," said Denise Burns, supervisor of the MSC food bank.

Volunteers helped run the food bank, serving 185 people with emergency and supplemental food that day.

A call to action (continued)

This was a tool for accountability.

But it can't stop with that one tool. There are other promises, for example, students can make that will demonstrate their commitment.

For example, they can:

Learn all they can from teachers and parents. They aren't going to make any quick starts in today's world without trusting adults who happen to be in positions of control. "Adults have all the cookies."

Leave the cell phones at home. Students 10 years ago didn't "need" them.

Slain deputy's mom wins back gang unit

King County Council members voted last week to re-establish a permanent gang suppression unit in the King County Sheriff's Office.

The original gang suppression unit was disbanded in 1996.

Council budget committee members also urged priority funding in the 2008 county budget for the gang suppression unit.

"Every community in King County has felt the impact of increasing gang violence, but for the White Center and North Highline neighborhoods, the reformation of the gang suppression unit has special meaning," said Councilman Dow Constantine, D-West Seattle.

Des Moines election case is settled

A $140,000 settlement in a case involving state campaign law violations prior to the 2001 Des Moines city election was announced last week by the Attorney General's Office.

TME Capital Group, Environmental Materials Transport and Monarch Enterprises Inc. illegally funneled contributions through then-Councilman Don Wasson to support the campaigns of Maggie Steenrod, Richard Benjamin and Gary Petersen.

Steenrod, Benjamin and Petersen were elected, creating a 4-3 council majority that favored construction of the third runway at SeaTac International Airport.

Riders play TJ

Thomas Jefferson tangled with perennial power Kentwood for four quarters Thursday and for the most part got the job done.

But the Conquerors prevailed by a 28-0 score in the end, gradually building the lead one step at a time throughout the game.

"I thought for the most part we played really good defense," said first year Thomas Jefferson coach Dean Peck. "In time we'll get the whole package."

The defense was not as good as it can be, either.
