On to Phase Two for Burien Town Square

Urban Partners announced last week that it is moving forward with the full architectural design of Burien Town Square Phase II.

The next step in the development of Town Square in downtown Burien follows what Urban Partners described as "the success of Burien Town Square Phase I."

The firm noted in a news release that "nearly one-third of available condominium homes [have been] sold a full year before scheduled completion."

Urban Partners is set to begin construction of Phase II in fall of 2008.

Julie Burr Spani elected president as a new majority seated on Highline School Board

Julie Burr Spani was selected president of the Highline School Board on Dec. 12 as three new members joined the board.

Spani, first elected to the board in November 2005, previously served as vice president.

King County District Court Judge Victoria Seitz swore in the three new members.

Sili Savusa replaced Tom Slattery, who had served on the board for 16 years.

Bernie Dorsey took the place of eight-year board member Phyllis Byers. Dorsey was elected vice president.

Michael D. Spear took the seat of his uncle, Matt Pina.

'Drive-through Christmas Story' presented by Des Moines church

Last weeken Normandy Christian Church between Des Moines and Normandy Park is again offered a unique holiday treat.

From Dec. 14 to Dec. 16, the church presented its annual "Drive-through Christmas Story".

Visitors to the event were transported to Bethlehem while driving through the church parking lot.

Participants saw scenes of angels, shepherds, a donkey, sheep and goats. Scenes included the Nativity with church volunteers portraying Mary, Joseph and the Wise Men.

'The river is rising'

In view of the catastrophic floods that have recently devastated the region it is worth reflecting on the history of floods in the immediate area. Historically the southern part of the county experienced the worst flooding because of Mount Rainier. Up to 1917 when the Hiram Chittenden Locks were put into service over 1,600 square miles of watershed fed the White, Green and Black rivers, that flowed together in what is today Tukwila, to form the Duwamish River.
