Guite, Landon receive awards

Highline Water District commissioners Jerry Guite and George Landon recently were presented with a Commissioners Accreditation Award.

The award recognizes efforts by Guite and Landon in continuing the Commissioner Accreditation Guidelines in the Washington Association of Sewer and Water Districts Leadership Development Program this year.

The award is presented to those commissioners who have initially completed the Leadership Development Certification guidelines and continued attending workshops, which include instruction in education on legal and ethical requirements of

Lois Mae Baulig

Lois Mae Baulig was born on February 14, 1930 in Aberdeen, Wash. and passed away on December 10, 2007 in Des Moines, WA. She is survived by her husband Gerald "Jerry" Baulig, son Tom Baulig, daughter Jane Keniston and mother Emma Hubert. She will be laid to rest at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, WA. West Seattle native Stephen Hill, 47, died from natural causes Nov.

Major paving is completed on third runway

Major paving on the third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport is done, Port of Seattle officials have announced.

The paving was poured 17 inches thick on the 150-foot-wide runway that is 8,500 feet long.

Workers will hand pave the aprons and connections to the adjoining taxiways. Construction of asphalt shoulders and painting also need to be finished, according to port officials.

Burien Nar-Anon offers hope

There is a new support group in town and it is believed to be the only one of its kind in the area.

Nar-Anon, which helps people reclaim their lives, is now officially in Burien.

The organizer of the Burien group, extending a personal welcome to the community, recently said, "I feel that God clearly led me to start a new group in our area for others like me who have been struggling with a loved one's addiction.

Nar-Anon operates from the principle that addiction is a family disease.

Firefighters rescue man trapped in home by fire

Burien

December 9-An 87-year-old Burien man suffered second-degree burns in an early morning home fire before his dramatic rescue by two North Highline firefighters.

The victim, who had to be resuscitated at the scene, was in serious but stable condition in the burn unit at Harborview Medical Center late last week.

According to North Highline Fire Chief Scott LaVielle, firefighters were dispatched to the house at 12638 14th Ave. S. at 12:06 a.m.

Two Highline middle schools recognized for WASL gains

Pacific and Sylvester middle schools earned honorable mentions in the recent 2007 State Superintendent Learning Improvement Awards.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson praised both schools for remarkable gains in mathematics and reading on last year's Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL).

"You are doing amazing things in your school," said Bergeson in letters to Pacific and Sylvester staffs.

Burien bond support gauged

After completing its design process for a new community recreation center, the city of Burien now is surveying the public about financing options for the proposed facility.

Approximately 3,000 households in the community have received the paper survey and the city is reminding recipients to return their surveys as soon as possible.

"It is very important to us to hear from the public, so we've made it easy for our random sample to complete the survey," said Michael Lafreniere, Director of Parks and Recreation.

This Santa makes toys in Boulevard Park

Meet the real Santa and one of his Elves. And they don't live in the North Pole. Much closer. Right in Boulevard Park.

The big guy is Tim Frei and the elf is Grady Olsen.

They are a couple of talented guys who not only deliver toys, they make them.

Well, Tim does but the Elf does hand painted greeting cards.

Both are from Boise Valley in Idaho, retired, and they keep busy making things that make kids happy.

Tim has played Santa scores of times if you are looking for the real thing, not some stand-in.
