SeaTac elementary students mind their manners during fancy lunch at airport hotel

On Tuesday, Feb. 5, a group of fifth and sixth grade students from Bow Lake Elementary had lunch not in the school cafeteria, but in a restaurant with linen tablecloths.

The SeaTac Airport Doubletree Hotel hosted lunch for the Bow Lake Explorer class.

The Explorer program provides multi-grade classrooms for gifted students.

Trio of missing players leave Mount Rainier short

Good news became known from at first bad news, real bad news, and, it all came to light in a 24-hour period, as the Mount Rainier Rams were catapulted from the ranks of the unbeaten in the Seamount League with an 89-49 slam-dunking by the host Renton Indians Thursday.

The Rams learned Friday that the "athletic participation agreement" violation leading to the suspension of three key players for three weeks starting Jan. 29 or thereabouts would be shortened to one week, thanks to a successful appeal to the league.

Renter aid bill alive in State Legislature

The passage of a bill that would boost aid for renters being displaced by condominium conversions is looking promising as it makes its way through the State Legislature this session, but an amendment that would have given Seattle the power to limit conversions failed to garner enough support.

During the last several years, West Seattle has lost hundreds of its lower-income rentals to conversions.

I would like to encourage and invite anyone interested in the present and future development of Des Moines to GET INVOLVED! Many issues are being discussed that will affect how our City grows. Having lived nearly all of my 38 years here, I have seen and been a part of many changes Des Moines has encountered.

Burien Man arrested in home for domestic violence

The King County Sheriff's SWAT Team made a mid-morning arrest without incident of a domestic violence suspect at a home in the 12800 block of Ambaum Blvd. S.W.

Shortly before 5 a.m., a woman calling 9-1-1said her boyfriend had physically assaulted her during the night and had not let her leave. She eventually was able to get out of the house and place the call.

Jean Hueston honored by county

Retired public school teacher and community and political activist Jean Hueston of Des Moines was honored recently when the fifth floor of a new King County office building was named in her honor.

"Jean has encouraged and mentored hundreds of young people over the years, and has been instrumental in the election of many local, state and federal public officials," said King County Council Chairwoman Julia Patterson.

"She has taught us that political leadership can be a reality for anyone who has the passion for public service.
