Make love, not war is theme of Burien comedy

Laugh at the battle of the sexes in Lysistrata, a bawdy comedy about making love not war, which opens at Burien Little Theatre Friday, April 4.

In the show, which runs through April 27, the women of Greece make a pact to withhold their sexual favors until the men of Greece agree to stop their endless fighting.

In addition to this modern translation of the play by Aristophanes, the show has been further adapted to a 1950s setting and includes an original music score.

Lysistrata features the talents of actors Kristen Alexander, Emily Cappel, Brian Kiger, John Lyn

Water District 49 starts on storts

Water District 49 in Burien has launched a project to replace the "storts" on local fire hydrants.

A stort is a time-saving device that is permanently attached to a fire hydrant so firefighters don't have to hook up an adaptor before connecting a fire hose.

The project, which got underway in October, will continue over the next several years to upgrade hydrants throughout the water district that are identified by the Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department (Fire District 2).

WD 49 will replace storts on 10 to 12 hydrants annually, which help firefighters skip an e

Public's help asked to find gun-wielding shop robber

March 7 - The King County Sheriff's Office is asking for help from the public to catch a man who robbed a Burien tobacco shop while armed with a handgun.

The incident occurred just before 8 p.m. at the Burien Tobacco Mart, 14400 Ambaum Blvd. S.W.

According to sheriff's office spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart, the suspect entered the business and went to the beer and wine cooler before going up to the counter.

He then pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the cash register.

Rams shut down Lancers in showdown

The Mount Rainier Rams sit atop the heap in boys soccer for the Seamount League after the first-half of the season was nearly completed with a 3-0 win over their Kennedy Lancer rivals Thursday at Starfire in Tukwila.

The Rams' first-place mark is 6-0, 6-0-1. Their only tie? That was 2-2 against Thomas Jefferson of Federal Way, a top South Puget Sound League 4A team this season, maybe a to-be state champ in their respective classification.

Bikers belong to the same club

By Dave Kannas

"Hey man, is that your bike out there?" I wasn't sure whether I could reasonably deny the fact since I was the only person in the room who was wearing the signature spandex, jersey and day-glow green riding vest.

This meeting of cultures took place at Alki Bakery, home of the West Seattle Chapter of the Center of the Known Universe. This is where many bicyclists go to contemplate the state of the world over coffee and baked goods. It's also a great place to meet and talk with bikers from around the region.

'27 Dresses' misses the mark

Rated PG-13

"27 Dresses" has two things going for it: a clever concept and Katherine Heigl. It could use something more.

Red Flowering Currant - Plant of the Month

One of my favorite early spring blooms is the Red Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum). If you know any latin based language like Spanish, you might recognize that sanguineum is similar to the word sangre which means blood. Blood is red, of course, but the most common form of this plant's flower is really more of a pink.

The species was first described in 1793 by Archibald Menzies on the voyage of Captain George Vancouver.
