At Large in Ballard - On the outside

I've been known to claim that I can't leave my house without encountering what I consider a story. That's just a claim, the truth is that sometimes we have our eyes open to the outside world, other times we're so caught up in our "to do" list that we barely notice our surroundings. Knowing that I was going to be out of town I allowed myself a morning walking around Ballard, with my public eyes open.

St. Alphonsus students enjoy "Blood and Guts" at health fair

St. Alphonsus Parish School held its first health fair, a four-day event celebrating good nutrition, exercise, hand washing, vision care, germ avoidance, and "Blood and Guts." That ear-catching theme boasted interactive anatomical exhibits including a healthy pig lung suspended next to an unhealthy one affected by cigarette smoking. Rubber brains, giant teeth, and human skulls fascinated students who handled them.

The April 7-10 event might become a biennial event according to Linda Broderick who organized the fair. She said it was a huge success.

Buddy the Cat Dog

Buddy, a 4 year pure bred Pug is a very loving guy. He lives with Eric and Megan Walker and family and while he is most certainly a dog, he behaves like a cat.

He loves to sit on laps...not lay on them, but sit, upright. He enjoys sitting on the back of the couch and looking out the window, waiting for the Walkers to come home. When called, he often seems to have something better to do. All very cat like behaviors.

The road to socialism is paid for with higher taxes

The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of "liberalism" they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.

Pirates stave off Totems comeback

For a short while, this game was tough going, as in close, as in having Tyee rally back gamely in the middle innings to stay within striking distance of the host Highline Pirates. But the purple and black uniformed young ladies pulled away with a couple big innings late to win going away, 16-8, at Mosier Field Monday.

"We are young, but we play well," said Pirates head coach Dave Stark.

There's no way to put it into a complete picture, but to say it as competitively as possible, this game did indeed have the makings of a good old fashioned rivalry.

Yeah, really. This one had the feel of a Seattle Mariners major league baseball game, as the Kennedy Lancers played the West Seattle Wildcats in the 2nd Annual High School Baseball Classic Thursday.

At Safeco Field.

That's right! These kids all got to play there last week.

The game score itself really played out immaterial almost, 11-2, Wildcats, as both teams were on different ground for this one.
