Low rise could

be a mockery

We wish to point out that the change proposed to Seattle Municipal Code 23.45.009 Structure Height - Low Rise Zones by the new proposed Multifamily Zoning Ordinance would be detrimental in the extreme to our single family neighborhood which abuts the new proposed zoning categories of LRT, LRT 1 and LRT 2.

The current 25 foot allowable height for multifamily structures is being raised to 35 feet. Currently, under SMC rules, a 10 foot penthouse is allowed on the roof for mechanical equipment, play equipment, rooftop deck, chimneys etc.

Appreciate Bruce Bulloch

I am writing to express my appreciation for the film reviews of Bruce Bulloch.

What I most enjoy is how well written and interesting his work is. It's not at all necessary to have prior knowledge about the work. Each piece of his gives me an idea of what his point of view is, why he says what he does. Each is interesting in its own right.

As someone who has long been highly critical of all opinion pieces, I'm very glad that Mr. Bulloch writes for the West Seattle Herald.

Alki Tavern mural

In response to Gary Daum's Letter to the Editor (It's my Artwork) on April 9, I think I can help "set the record straight" regarding the sign on the front of the Alki Tavern. My name is Gill McLynne and I have owned the Alki for 32 years. Gary did paint the original sign in 1976 when I opened. After 18 years of wind and rain the sign was touched up in 1994. Mr. Daum's name and the date were not painted over. I wouldn't allow it.

Speed cameras and pedestrian safety

By Nick Licata

In the Seattle City Council's Pedestrian Safety Advisory Committee on April 1, the Council got some good news about one of its 2008 budget proposals.

The 2005, Washington State Legislature has authorized the use of photo detection to enforce speed limits in school zones. The same year they also authorized red-light camera enforcement.

City to bring us 'traffic calming'

A few of the area's worst hotspots for speeding drivers and pedestrian safety are getting some attention from city transportation officials who said last week they plan to install "traffic calming" measures and other fixes to help slow traffic flow.

Luke Korpi, a senior civil engineer with the Seattle Department of Transportation's Neighborhood Traffic Engineering Group, said two projects would start by this summer.

Three projects on California

Continuing the area's building boom, three new developments on California Avenue Southwest are under review by the city planning department, including one developer's third major project here.

BlueStar Management Inc, developers of the planned Fauntleroy Place/Whole Foods and the recently announced Gateway Center mixed-use apartment structures, have applied to build a six-story, 91-unit apartment building with 4,000 square feet of retail at 5020 California.

Burien wants only part of North Highline area

The city manager of Burien recommends that city annex 2.7 square miles of the North Highline unincorporated area, a move that would add 14,350 people to the city's current 32,000 population.

The proposal by City Manager Mike Martin includes the Boulevard Park area, which has also been targeted by the city of Sea-Tac.

Martin said that if SeaTac decides it wants to annex the area, he would immediately modify the recommendation.

By adding Boulevard Park, Martin's recommendation is larger than the three partial options he offered earlier.

Surgery not always needed

Joan Bateman, myself, and Dr. Khalfayan all agree that surgery should be avoided whenever possible.

Like me, Joan has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis which for her has meant a bum right knee joint.

Osteoarthritis - osteo = bone, arthro = joint, itis = inflammation is a degenerative joint disease which affects healthy synovial fluid and cartilage.
