A monument to Tim St. Clair

It has been nearly four months since our friend Tim St. Clair died and some of us are just getting to grips with the fact this genuinely wonderful human being has passed.

This writer has not been though a day without thinking about Tim, usually saying, "Where is Tim? He would know the answer to this question."

When we need to know the backgound for a story, Tim knew because he had made West Seattle his home for 20 years. This editor always deferred to Tim's encyclopaedic memory of the place.

A jail in our midst?

The city has to build a jail and two of the potential sites are in our area. Some say the sites are in South Park, others say Highland Park, still others say White Center. Actually it is not "in" any of them, but that is really an insignificant point not worthy of angst.

What is a concern is that a city jail with misdemeanants will be close by. Some will react harshly and claim never in my backyard. Well it has to go someplace as the Admiral Community Council said.

More ink on solutions

Thank you for your politically proactive response from Dow Constantine ("Public safety cuts are necessary" June 16). For six of the seven paragraphs in the column Constantine or his staff lay out the "problems." I appreciate the stomachache. I can always use another. "We need to do this." "We need to do that." Your three-quarter page of free press is nothing new to us. We like to feel we know the problems.

The closing paragraph at the end of Constantine's political diatribe suggests ". .

Beauty and the Beast

Come gather round and hear the tale

Of one so brave, yet slightly frail

Whose classic form and stylish grace

Brought beauty to our Westside place

Alas one day that greedy sort

King Condo spied our little court

And quickly claimed this treasured prize

Then moved to hasten her demise

Her fate was looking mighty dower

For in her place he planned a tower

Police don't want to talk about concerns

By Debbie Smith

You know how "some people" protest in the streets for one cause or another and they turn over cars, break windows and loot businesses, lie in the street to block cars and generally create havoc?

Pretty disgusting, isn't it? I always thought so. If you are one of "those people" then you might as well stop reading right now because you probably won't like what I write.

I've always considered myself a very reasonable sort of person.

Alki traffic on 4th to be restricted

Harkening back to a tradition of old, Seattle Police plan to enforce some July 4th traffic rules that will affect West Seattle residents and other celebrants who flock to the Alki and North Admiral areas hoping for a good view of fireworks.

"Increased vehicle traffic on the holiday has become a hazard for emergency resources," says Lt. Norm James of the Southwest Precinct. "Most spectators are well behaved, but the occasional large crowd disturbance does require a fast response."

So beginning at 6 p.m.

North Admiral post office to close in July

Customers are finding it more and more difficult and time consuming to wait through long lines at the post office just to buy a small book of stamps.

It's not just the holiday season that gets the rush and lines out the door anymore. But with mail and package drop-offs, mail pick-ups, package purchases and buying stamps all filtering through the same counter, the traffic at the post office can look like rush hour on I-5 on a rainy Friday afternoon.

To make life easier, Verne Valentine has run the North Admiral Post Office, 2237 California Ave.
