More on KQIN

Regarding my letter last week in The Highline Times concerning the disappearance of Burien's radio station.

There is one correction needed. It was not KGNW who closed the KQIN studio on SW 153rd.

It was the prior owner, Green Bay Packer Willie Davis, who moved the studio to downtown Seattle. Then he sold it to Salem Broadcasting the current owner.

Bush is right

The headlines today ask the question "IS BUSH RIGHT ON OIL DRILLING?"

The fact that anyone has to ask the question when gas is approaching $5.00 per gallon is telling in and of its self.

But as usual, Bush is late coming to the party and does not go far enough with his solutions or assurances that the environment will not be harmed.

Three confirmed dead in Terra Apartments blaze

Three people died in a major fire that broke out during the early morning hours of June 29th at the Terra Apartments at 5th Ave S.W. and 155th. The fire destroyed two apartment buildings. When Cissy Harkelrode smelled smoke at around midnight she knew enough to get out, making her escape out the balcony door of her apartment, then climbing out to hang on a tree limb and balcony rails. Two adjoining eight unit apartments at 155th and 5th sw in Burien were involved. No residents had fire insurance in the low income apartments.

How bio-solid waste is made

Bio-solid waste is everything that flushes down the toilet plus dirty dishwater and the water used to wash clothes.

Once the waste reaches the Miller Creek facility the solids are strained from water where a digester breaks down the solids and bacteria into a thick black liquid or sludge.

From there the sludge is filtered to remove excess water and turns into a mudcake.

2008 Class aces WASL requirement

The big WASL nightmare did not come true for Highline's Class of 2008.

However, almost a third of the senior class did not earn enough class credits to graduate.

This year's high-school seniors were in the first class required to pass the reading and writing portions of Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in order to graduate.

At the beginning of the school year in September, 110 Highline Public Schools seniors were on track with class credits but had not met state WASL standards and were in danger of not graduating in June.

Highline eyes school bond in light of rising costs

"Fewer Schools-More Money"

That definitely won't be the rallying cry for those supporting a school-construction bond that could be on the ballot in March.

However, with rapidly rising construction costs, that would be the reality Highline Public Schools board members were told last week.

Assistant Superintendent Geri Fain pointed out the $189.5 million bond approved in 2002 to pay for 10 projects, including replacement of seven schools, would cost $407 million if passed in 2008.

The $148 million bond, passed two years ago for technolog

The Hi-Liners DownStage Center has announced an exclusive three-performance engagement of Disney's "Mulan Jr." July 11-13 at the Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center, located on the campus of Kent-Meridian High School.

These performances highlight a couple of firsts for the Hi-Liners, a Burien-based non-profit youth theater company.

This is their first time generating a production in the city of Kent and the first time they have been named the featured theater event for the Kent Cornucopia Days, sponsored by the Kent Lions.
