Heat pours it on

The boys' U13 Highline Premier Football Club (HPFC Heat) captured first place in the Nike Cup in Lake Oswego, Ore. The tournament took place July 27 - 29 and the Heat played four games before making the championship. They won three games and tied the fourth to go into the Championship game, which they won in dramatic 1-0 finish.

The team is made up of 15 boys from the Burien and West Seattle areas. The coaches of the team are Don Preiss and John Frank.

Burien octogenarian survived Pearl Harbor

Meet Ralph Holm

Age 87, he has been a member of the Burien Elks for 38 years, and is also a Pearl Harbor Survivor member.

He was a Seaman 2nd class just reporting for duty when he spotted a strange Japanese plane heading his way so he sensed something wrong and dashed below deck to his battle station.

The plane was one of scores of bombers, which attacked and sank the battleship Oklahoma.

Ralph's ship, the battleship Maryland suffered little damage though it was moored alongside.

Women have come a long way

Jerry's 'discovery' marks 5 years of great stories

Over five years ago, I met him.

On a sunny day he approached me at my Burien Strawberry Festival booth. At first, I did not know him. He asked questions-- lots of questions, about my writing. I politely answered as I kept wondering....who is this guy?

Then, a friend standing near-by greeted the mystery man and woman next to him with, "Hi Jerry and Elsbeth." Elsbeth?

Hats off to Jerry

Re: Jerry Robinson receives honorary degree from Highline Community College.

I only wish that The University of Washington would also recognize this brilliant man.

I grew up in White Center.

I also had the opportunity to work for the West Seattle Herald and meet Jerry Robinson.

One of the books he wrote--an accumulation of columns from life in White Center from the 50's to the 70's-- is truly a gift for me and my family to recapture and preserve our early childhood days.

Suspect name released in Lakota Middle School shooting

On August 14, at approximately 8:21 p.m., officers were dispatched to a shooting at Lakota Middle School, located at 1415 SW 314 Street in Federal Way.

When officers arrived a 26 year old Hispanic male victim was located and determined to have suffered fatal gunshot wounds.

The preliminary information indicates that a black SUV type vehicle occupied by several Hispanic males entered the parking lot and fired shots, striking the victim.

The vehicle fled the scene.

Design review cancelled for Sunset Bowl property

The second design review meeting for a proposed 234-unit apartment building at 1400 N.W. Market St. has been cancelled.

The six-story apartment building would replace Sunset Bowl, which operated in Ballard as a 24-hour bowling alley and diner for the past 51 years. It closed in April.

Developers AvalonBay Communities Inc. were scheduled to present a revised design to the Northwest Design Review Board the evening of August 25 at the Ballard High Library.
