Children And More

13 going on generous

By Lauri Hennessey

I recall a woman telling me once at party years ago that her 12-year-old was rebelling, starting to date boys too early, and starting to be snappy and surly.

I listened with trepidation, holding my new baby in my arms and wondering how I could avoid this fate. I remember the woman sighed deeply and said (something to the effect), "I don't know what good it will do me to correct anything at this point. All of those parenting experts say that once your kid hits 13, you've done pretty much all you can do anyway.

Mayor Nickel and Dime Us

This 20 cent bag fee is a waste of our government time and resources. Basically, it is just a way for mayor Greg Nickel and Dime Us to get into our wallets. This is at a time when there are other things that our government needs to focus on.

And I am greatly offended that Mayor Nickel and Dime Us is dictating what our needs our. I am one of many that reuse those grocery bags as trash liners. Any excess that I may have does go into the recycle bin as well.

Keep the bag tax

Our elected City Council tried to do (its) job minimizing waste by implementing a retail bag tax. A group of citizens supposedly concerned about the cost to the consumer, including the Washington Food Industry and industries producing disposable bags, are screaming "taxes!" in the media, creating fear and distrust to build support for a referendum.

If you choose not to bring bags or forget once in a while and the $.20 per bag tax really threatens your budget, then you should be in line at the Food Bank and not at a grocery store.

I kiss better than I cook

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

Do you belong to one of those families who settle for the little motel with no class? Believe me, our family has been there. You drive up and right away notice the disreputable cars parked out front, some missing hubcaps and some with dents never repaired. You know that even if you asked to see the room that is available it will have the same sunken mattress and the same scarred furniture that you have been offered on the road before.

Now fast forward a few years.

Rupert, Sophie, Dixie, and all the other wonderful dogs and their companions thank you for turning out for the Doney Memorial Pet Clinic. We raised $525. Please be assured your donations will be spent wisely.

Our sincere thanks to the West Seattle Thriftway, Dave and Dave Pet Photography, and City Dog Magazine for their support.

They don't need

our money

That's some spell at the mayor's office. You got it what's wrong with this? The mayor Greg Nickels only got $60,000 for our toilets, they cost us, the taxpayers, $5 million. I think a better way would have been to make them payolas in businesses like markets, city and state functions where we could have recouped money back in to the city. The proprietors could have kept an eye out. Would have given more protection away from streets.

And if they want to get more moneys in fund, how about enforcing noise control?

Search on for Scouts at 1st Liberty statue dedication

The weather was cool, the sky overcast the day the Alki Statue of Liberty was originally dedicated. A crowd of people, a "parade of a thousand" crowded around the statue. Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts stood in packs on the boardwalk with their troop flags waving.

But Cub Scout Troop 282 was late, arriving just as the ceremony began. To see anything, Harald Sund and the rest of his troop stayed on the sidewalk above.

Sund was 9.

Control of megahouses considered by Council

The Seattle City Council's proposed "Megahouse Legislation" will be debated in a public hearing on Sept. 22 and could take effect as early as November of this year.

In response to community outcry against new, massive homes that tower over their neighbors, the bill was introduced on July 28. It would modify the land use and zoning standards of single family neighborhoods for the first time since 1982.

"The building design profession has dramatically changed since then," said Richard Conlin, Seattle City Council president.
