21st Century Viking

When I moved to Seattle, Ballard was the first neighborhood I checked out. I had heard that it was a Scandinavian neighborhood and I'm part Finnish.

I am not one of the new condo overlords but I would like to someday own a house in Ballard because I love it here. From my travels around Ballard the past two years, it is quite obvious that I arrived in the middle of a massive change. I count myself lucky that I got to have a meal at 3 a.m. at Denny's and bowl at Sunset.

Support for Carlyle

We support Reuven Carlyle to succeed Helen Sommers as State Representative for the 36th Legislative District. Reuven won the primary in August and as such was the choice of the voters in Washington's first "top-two" primary.

It will be a major challenge for either Reuven or his opponent, John Burbank, to replace the irreplaceable Helen Sommers. But, we believe Reuven better embodies and embraces the qualities of Helen Sommers that has made her such an effective legislator.

It's pumpkin carving time

Every year Michelle and Jaclyn Rolen of Ballard get a group of their friends together to have an annual pumpkin carving contest at Golden Gardens. There are categories like largest pumpkin (everyone brings their own), Freestyle or Stencil, and Most Creative with prizes like fall candles or Starbuck's coffee cards. Michelle makes a big pot of chili and the carving takes place at one of the picnic tables there at the park.

From left they are Michelle Rolen, Aaron Frohm, Petra Slapnicka, Jaclyn Rolen, Attila Sarhegyi, William Ritchey, Tracie Shaw and young Skyler Rocky Lundgren.

Greenmarket to be redeveloped

Johnston Architects revealed three possible design schemes Oct. 27 for new development on the plot of land at Northwest 64th Street and 32nd Avenue Northwest that currently houses the Sunset Hill Greenmarket.

Scheme 1 calls for leaving the current building untouched and building a new structure set back 10 feet. Scheme 2 attaches a new structure to the existing building. Scheme 3 would tear down the existing structure and replace it with an entirely new building.

The current building is two stories and about 28 feet in height.

No on Sound Transit

One of the major ballot measures on Nov 4 is the Sound Transit Proposition 1. I am voting no.

First, we need a reality check of just how big a tax increase we're going to need to fix "the worst first": the critical infrastructure like the viaduct, 520, South Park bridge, etc.

An analogy: if we have a roof literally falling apart on our house, we should know what it is going to cost to replace it before we go ahead and sign a contract for an addition.

Second, there is significant room for growth with Metro bus service.

Happy Boss Day

Oops. I missed it.

Boss Day was last week and I forgot to get the card, so I'm hoping you can help bail me out.

My boss is one of the hardest working people I know. She also has a bit of an odd job. For about a quarter of the year she is full time. Realistically during that period it is more than full time. During the other months of the year she is supposed to be part time, yet I've seen her work every day for a couple weeks in a row, weekends included, because of the demands of the company and the people she works for.

Upthegrove award irresponsible

As a former high school teacher and current school attorney, I am concerned about the student journalism award that Rep. Upthegrove received.

He has been pushing irresponsible legislation aimed at removing all adult supervision over high school student publications in Washington public schools. This would have the same effect as removing the driving instructor form the car in Driver's Education classes.

There have not been any situations around the state where students have had their publications censored to make such legislation reasonable.
