Green Lake library book drop now open

The Seattle Public Library's Green Lake Branch and book drop reopened to the public on Nov. 19.

The branch and book drop were closed Oct. 2 to remove mold found in a crawl space. The library worked with several remediation companies to remove the mold and lead paint on the walls of the crawl space, deep clean the building, and complete air quality tests.

The library discovered the mold while investigating odors detected in the building.

Correction

In the Nov. 19 issue of the Ballard News-Tribune, the owner's names of Veraci Pizza were misspelled ("Pizzas from farmers' market's to streets of south Ballard", page 4). The names should be spelled "Marshall and Errin Jett." We regret the error.

Being better drivers means longer independence for Seniors

Ask professional driving instructor Daniel Lilleness what the difference is between teaching 15 year-olds and teaching senior citizens, and he will declare, "The young ones you can't get their foot on the brake and the old ones you can't get their foot off the brake. It's that easy."

That blunt, public response earned him some belly laughs from his audience of senior citizens at a recent all-day class he held at the West Seattle Christian Church basement.

21st Century Viking: Honoring Edith Macefield

Every time I go to Fred Meyer, my path takes me by the commercial space that is currently being erected on Northwest 46th Street between 14th and 15th avenues northwest. Toward the 15th Avenue side of the block still stands the house of the late Edith Macefield (1921-2008), formerly of 1438 N.W. 46th Ave., Ballard.

If anyone from Ledcor Construction, the developers of the retail space are reading this blog, I would like to suggest to them that they honor the memory of Edith Macefield.

Chamber welcomes new residents

The Ballard Chamber of Commerce is launching an effort to get new Ballard residents to shop locally this holiday season.

Merchandise bags, stuffed with coupons and promotions from area businesses, will be distributed to the estimated 1,000 new Ballardites here in condos and apartment buildings in December.

The contents makeup essentially a starter-kit for new residents, including a letter welcoming new residents and encouraging them to shop local; a list of local holiday activities; a copy of the Ballard Business Directory and the Ballard News-Tribune.
