Eagles start strong in district tourney

The current No. 1 Washington state ranked Federal Way Eagles boys basketball team -- and the defending 4A state champs -- continued their glorious run toward repeat greatness, quarter by quarter further destroying the visiting Bethel Braves, 82-37, in the first round of the West Central District tourney Thursday.

The Eagles, to note, had just beat Curtis, the South Puget Sound League South Division champ, a few days earlier, 59-52, in a North versus South finale showdown, and, despite that win, head coach Jerome Collins spoke knowing his team could have done more.

"We weren't pleased with our game against Curtis and I just thought we came into this game against Bethel with a focus, a deep focus, and we wanted to establish ourselves early," said Collins, whose team finished 16-0 in the regular SPSL North season and sit at 21-1 overall, the loss to out-of-state defending 5A Oregon champ Jefferson of Portland.

The Eagles did what to salve their displeasure of themselves.

"We hit the practice floor hard," said Collins.

Neighborhood weighs in on possible Ballard light rail

During his Feb. 16 state of the city address, Mayor Mike McGinn reaffirmed his commitment to putting light rail expansion on the ballot within two years. During his campaign, McGinn said one of his priorities for that expansion would be a line to Ballard.

Seattle's transportation system is not working the way it should, and it is imperative the city invest in more transit, McGinn said in his speech.

"The fact of the matter is – and we are seeing it right now – the era of big highways is over," he said.

Barry Hawley, owner of Hawley Realty in Ballard, said the expansion of the Link Light Rail system is a worthwhile discussion because Ballard needs to be tied into the future transportation circuitry of the city in some way.

"I think light rail would be helpful," he said. "I think that it would certainly be nice."

David Folweiler, one of the driving forces behind Ballard Corners Park, said light rail would benefit neighborhood, especially the thousands of Ballardites who commute downtown.

Gators topple Olympia in OT

A passion for winning and an energetic environment at home brought the No. 5 South Puget Sound League seeded Decatur boys basketball team off the floor numerous times and led to a 70-67 overtime victory against visiting No. 4 Narrows league seed Olympia in a first-round match up of the West Central 4A District tournament at Decatur High School on Wednesday.

The Gators (15-8) advance to the quarterfinals and a winner-to-state game at 6 p.m. Friday at Auburn High School against Kentwood, the same team that throttled the Gators 62-42 last Thursday in the SPSL Tournament. Decatur is in quest of its fourth consecutive journey to the Class 4A state. Olympia plays

"After the poor performance, we needed to come home," Gator head coach Kevin Olson admitted. "We wouldn't have beat (Olympia) at their place. That's for sure. It was huge being home...You don't want to lose your opener and then have to win three straight to get to state."

Jerron Smith and Jordan McCloud stayed aggressive and mentally tough to make sure the Gators remained in the winner's bracket.

Beamer secures seventh seed

Todd Beamer utilized team balance to defeat Auburn Riverside 72-55 on Saturday, February 13, in a SPSL Class 4A boys basketball tournament game at the ShoWare Center to earn the league's No. 7 seed to the Class 4A West Central/Southwest bi-district tournament.

Beamer (15-6) travels to regular season SPSL South nemesis Curtis on Thursday, February 18, in opening district action.

"Our spacing was good and we shared the ball well," said Titan head coach Brent Brilhante. "We moved the ball well and gave Kevin (Davis) his touches. The team needs to trust each other to pass the ball to people that can score. Our obvious No. 1 option is Kevin, but we want to have balance."

Auburn Riverside rode its early quickness to a 14-4 lead while the Titans received good looks at the basket, but simply were unable to make shots. Todd Beamer began heating up from outside and scored eight consecutive points to trail only 14-12 on the strength of a Terelle Loggins breakaway basket ahead of a Davis three-pointer and a three-point goal from Lorenzo Holcomb. Loggins buried a three-pointer at the end of the quarter to keep Beamer within 16-15 after one quarter.

Two injured in hit-and-run

On February 17th at approximately 6:56 p.m., Federal Way Police responded to the call of a Hit and Run Motor Vehicle Accident involving two pedestrians and one vehicle located near 1800 SW 356th St.

Upon arrival, police located two injured individuals at the scene and it was reported an additional individual had left the scene on foot. This person was later located near an unrelated residence.

Initial investigation has shown a blue Dodge Dakota pick-up was being driven eastbound on SW 356th St by an Asian male, who is a 59 year old resident of Federal Way.

At the same time two pedestrians, a 20 year old Hispanic male and resident of Kent along with a 16 year old white male and resident of Tacoma, were walking eastbound on SW 356th St. In an attempt to reach a nearby bus stop, the two pedestrians began to run across SW 356th St and were struck by the vehicle.

The 16 year old was later released to a family member after being interviewed and transported for medical care with non-life threatening injuries.

Beamer advances at district

Todd Beamer opened West Central District boys basketball tournament action by edging out Curtis, 56-52, in the Vikings' own gymnasium.

Napa Mefi sealed the deal for the Titans by sinking a three-point shot with only 3.2 seconds left on the game clock.

Kevin Davis of Beamer scored 24 points and hauled down 14 rebounds, also using his 6-foot, 7-inch body to blocks three shots. Tyrell Lewis added 12 points.
