The Seattle African Violet Society and Puget Sound Gesneriad Society are hosting a display and sale of their club propagated plants at Swansons Nursery this weekend.

On hand are a wide variety of African Violet varieties and Gesneriads that demonstrate the incredible diversity of these easy-to-grow plants.

There are a number of prize-winning plants on display.

"Growing plants on the inside is great because you have blooms all year," said Rohm Gustafson, president of the Puget Sound Gesneriad Society.

Candidate Mike Heavey, "Why I am running."

Mike Heavey has announced his candidacy for State Representative from the 34th Legislative District, Position 2, the seat currently held by State Representative Sharon Nelson, who will run for the open State Senate seat in the same district this fall to be vacated by Joe McDermott. McDermott will try for Dow Constantine’s vacated King County Council seat which has been temporarily appointed to Jan Drago, who Heavey works for, as director of Outreach and Constituent Relations. He is Drago's lead policy person on law, justice, safety issues and an advocate for the South Park Bridge replacement, which he calls "a hot button issue." Heavey was an active volunteer on Dow Constantine's victorious King County Executive campaign.

Heavey, an Alki resident, sat down with the West Seattle Herald at the Alki Bakery Saturday, March 20, to discuss why he is jumping into the race. So far he will run against Sabra Schneider, Marcee Stone, Geoffrey “Mac” McElroy, and Nelson's aide, Joe Fitzgibbon.

SLIDE SHOW: Over 300 at Alki Street Scramble yielded many winners

Three hundred-plus people attended the Alki Street Scramble urban scavenger hunt, with check points on a map of Alki, North Admiral, and a few spots a bit further south. The object is to find a corresponding question to a multiple choice answer in 90 minutes, or 3 hours, depending on your heat. Categories for ribbons include walking, biking and pushing strollers. Feet First, a pedestrian advocacy group, will benefit from entry fees collected.

One question with its red number stamped on the map at Schmitz park describes "wooden stairs" and asks, "How many steps are there, 18, 24, or 30?" There were 55 questions total.

The "Scrambled Eggs," Lori Withrow and Rhiana Wiggins of West Seattle were a bicycle team donning bright yellow hooded tops.

After the race they said in unison, "Now we are fried eggs." Well, it was a lot of walking, and hot and sunny, too, and they won for their category, too.

Is a Washington State Bank a good idea?

Dear Editor,
Martha Keoster (see her email and link to the State Bank article below) is another progressive friend of mine who keeps up on important political issues. She’s worked tirelessly for single payer health care. Another issue we’ve been talking about lately is this State Bank idea now being tossed about in the WA state legislature (among others). I first heard of it when I heard Bill Bradley, running for Governor of Oregon, discuss the idea with Thom Hartman on the radio several weeks ago.

Admiral Theater goes back to where they began

Cuban music concert precedes screening of "Weekend in Havana"

January 22, 1942, the newly renovated Admiral Theater located in West Seattle debuted, boasting unique filmic innovations and an incredible art deco, nautical appearance, unlike anything Seattle had ever seen.

Built by the same architect that created the Hollywood Pantages, the theater showcased unique murals and etched seahorse glass chandeliers. The theater cost over $200,000 and charged outrageous admissions; adults 35 cents and children, a whopping 11 cents.

The film they showed was Weekend in Havana, a zany musical starring Caesar Romero, Alice Fey and Carmen Miranda. Well hang on to your maracas. Sunday, April 25th, the Admiral Theater will once again show, Weekend in Havana along with a concert by Charanga Danzon, an ensemble of Cuban dance music merging African and European influences, highlighting flute and violin. This could be the last concert to occur at the Admiral according to the owners.

The Burien - Three Tree Point Five Minute Loop

During the early 1960's, usually after midnight, Bobbie and I were at times awakened by an automobile or automobiles roaring past our home on Maplewood. These vehicles were traveling, or should I say, speeding, considerably faster than the posted 35 MPH speed limit. After these cars zoomed past our residence, we could hear the decreasing Doppler noises of screeching tires and brakes as the drivers wound and ascended their way up Maplewild toward the top of the hill, where Maplewild becomes 152nd St.

This was an exercise that the teen-agers of Highline called, "The Five Minute Loop". The Loop race started when a group of young people, driving their, or their parent's cars, would gather in the Burien Theatre parking lot near 152nd and Ambaum. One of the drivers, with or without passengers, would be timed as he whipped out of the theatre parking lot and headed southward down Ambaum Road, toward Five Corners. From Five Corners the racer would turn on to winding Sylvester Road, follow Sylvester through a portion of Normandy Park and then along what was known as The Colony, or, South Beach.

Beavers shutout by Seattle Prep

The Ballard High School boys soccer team was blanked for the first time this season March 18, losing 1-0 to Seattle Prep in its final nonconference match.

Seattle Prep's Alex Wilson and Mark Strecker combined for the shutout. Robby Dhorn was responsible for the match's only goal.

Dhorn's goal in the 68th minute continued a trend that Ballard coach Gary Hunter has noticed from his team this season.

The Beavers have been able to hold teams scoreless for more than an hour in every match before finally giving up a score.

Bellevue scored in the 77th minute and Stadium broke a 0-0 tie in the 60th minute against Ballard.

The Beavers are 0-2-1 on the season.

KingCo play begins for Ballard against Roosevelt at 7:30 p.m. on March 19 at Interbay Stadium.
