SLIDESHOW: West Seattle Junction Car Show becomes Wet Seattle Junction

Autos and visitors brave the weather

The Annual West Seattle Junction Car show saw more umbrellas than cars on Sunday, Sept. 19 as the weather kept dumping rain, sometimes in buckets on the event. Still, Seattleites are used to the rain but the bigger squalls made exhibitors and visitors alike run for the cover of Junction awnings. Some sunbreaks finally made it through to give attendees and exhibitors a break.

The weather limited attendance by the exhibitors too with only 142 cars registered by 10:00 a.m. (the show started at 8:00 a.m.) but June Farran, in charge of registration expected more to arrive.

On display were some of the regular car show veterans and a few new participants. All cars were pre-1975.

Taking part in the show were antique fire trucks from the Last Resort Fire Dept. and even a few boats including the Miss Oberto hydroplane.

Forest Monitoring team helps shape the future of Seattle's urban forest

The Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation, EarthCorps, Green Seattle Partnership (GSP), forest stewards and community volunteers are piloting a citizen science effort that engages Seattle residents in analyzing and monitoring the urban forest.

One team was working in Camp Long, near the South Loop Trail on Saturday Sept. 18 to assess the forest ecosystem in a small area that will be used as the basis for understanding the relative health of the urban forest in that area. The areas assessed have been predetermined and targeted to be "cleaned up" meaning invasive species such as Himalayan Blackberry and Ivy will be removed.

Malia Caracoglia, Program Coordinator for the GSP Forest Monitoring Team said, "We're collecting baseline data so that after next year, restoration will have occurred (...) and this 1/10th of an acre will represent this whole area that's going to be restored. It will be like a snapshot."

One of the first citizen science projects in the US to focus on urban forests, the Green Seattle Partnership Forest Monitoring Team engages communities in surveying the condition of their urban parks, forests and forested wetlands.

With beer supplied by The Beer Junction and Joel Hagman who played guitar and sang (he's a local musician with a CD "Caught on a Rail"). the whole neighborhood got together (under a tent as the event went on and the rain came back) and enjoyed "Pork, Pictures, and Prizes"

The organizer, Shelly Kurtz said, "Last year at the neighborhood night out, my husband Nathan and I were talking about things we'd like to do, and one of the things we talked about was spit roasting a pig. It was sort of on the Bucket List and we had some like minded neighbors so we started planning it and orginally we were going to do it in the empty lot on the alley but we ended up getting a street permit to close the street and it was sort of an organic grass roots movement."

Approximately 60 people showed up from around the area to get some of the 118 pound pig that they purchased from Central Market.

The impetus for the event was to raise money that will cover one year's rent for the multiple non- profits housed within the Youngstown Center.

The evening was made possible by SKIFFLE, a collaboration of Blank Canvas, All Access- the youth focused art program within the Youngstown Center- and partnerships with, Arts Corp, Rock School, Youth Media Institute, and the Nature Consortium.

Skiffle is an old English term for people coming together to raise rent money for an individual or group.

In 2009 Skiffle was able to raise $15,000 toward rent for non- profits at the Youngstown Center.

Blank Canvas is a cadre of creative people that believe a charitable contribution can mean more than a monetary one. With that in mind the Blank Canvas Artist Throwdowns materialized.

Artist Throwdowns are acts of spontaneous and collaborative paintings done all in one day, in one place, in the service of charity.
