Ballard ties Inglemoor, still in playoff hunt

Neither Ballard High School nor Inglemoor High School could put any points on the board during the Oct. 12 girls soccer match. But despite the 0-0 tie, the Beavers remain in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Senior keeper Berni Cardon earned the shutout for Ballard.

The Beavers' record of 2-4-1 in KingCo puts them in sixth place in the conference and in position for one of the final playoff spots.

Ballard has three matches left to earn the spot. A win against winless Newport at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at Newport High School would certainly help their cause.

Flamingos hatch at Woodland Park Zoo

Two Chilean flamingos have hatched at Woodland Park Zoo, marking the second successful breeding season for the species. The first chick hatched Oct. 3 followed by the second hatching on Oct. 9.

Both chicks are in the flamingo exhibit under the care of their parents, who feed them “crop milk,” a dark red secretion produced in their upper digestive tract. The substance is nutritionally similar to milk that is produced by mammals.

The chicks leave their nest about three to five days after hatching but remain in close proximity to their parents for feedings and brooding.

Three more eggs are expected to hatch later in the month, according to a Woodland Park Zoo press release.

Last year’s flock produced three chicks, which were hand-raised by the zoo staff before being introduced to the colony.

Flamingo chicks hatch with a whitish-gray down and can acquire extensive pink feathering that can be mixed with gray-brown contour feathers at about 1 year of age. Juveniles usually have full pink feathering by 2 to 3 years of age.

Brothel-themed Madame K's closing up shop

After two years with an uncertain future, Madame K's, Ballard Avenue's brothel-themed pizzeria, will be closing for good Oct. 28.

"Our lease is up again, and it finally feels like it's time for Madame K's to make its grand finale," owner Kirsten Burt said in a Madame K's press release.

Burt announced she was selling the restaurant in February 2009. But in March of that year, she said issues with her landlord would force her to stay open for another 17 months.

In the press release, Burt characterized her relationship with Madame K's landlord as turbulent. But now, more than 20 months after the initial announcement, the restaurant will shut its doors.

"We are sad but satisfied that this is the right time," Burt said in the press release.

Burt opened the restaurant 12 years ago after moving to Seattle from Ohio and becoming intrigued by Ballard Avenue's tawdry past. She heard there had once been a brothel in her future restaurant's space at 5327 Ballard Ave. N.W., spawning Madame K's theme.

A few years ago, Burt opened a second restaurant, Lazy K's, in Carnation. That business will remain open.

That Dreaded Corner

Truck transporting drywall fails to negotiate hair-pin turn on 21st Ave s.w. above Delridge Way

A truck driver’s GPS is to blame for directing his truck, carrying a full load of drywall, down the hairpin turn of 20th Ave s.w. and 21st Ave s.w. around 6 p.m. on Oct. 12.

The s-turn proved too sharp for his rig, its massive load shifting precariously downhill and lifting some of its rear wheels completely off the ground before he came to a stop.

The cargo bulged on the downhill side of the trailer, testing the limits of the cam straps that were holding everything in place.

His final destination, Home Depot, was within eyesight of the accident.

“Hopefully next time they’ll put up a sign (at the top of Holden St. before the s-curves begin) that says, “No Trucks”,” the driver, who asked not to be named, said.

He was transporting the drywall from Rainier, OR to Home Depot on Delridge Way when he encountered construction that forced him away from the original route.

His GPS unit recalibrated and sent him westbound on Holden St. towards the dreaded hairpin turns.

Café Revò closes

Emotional press release from the Friends of Sofia Goff

Contact: Kathi Cronin
206 799-1182
friendsofsofiagoff@gmail.com

Anyone who has enjoyed dining at West Seattle’s Café Revò will be saddened to hear that the Italian restaurant, with its tradition of “Mangia, bevi & godi” has been forced to close its doors. Despite the untimely death of Chef Chano a year ago (just months after they opened their doors), his wife, Sofia Goff and a talented staff did their best to keep this unique restaurant going. But in the current, difficult economy this proved to be impossible, and months of searching for a buyer were unsuccessful. Sofia and her family feel that the employees of Café Revo are like family and have kept the restaurant open longer than they could afford to do, out of the employee’s best interest. Sofia hopes that her wonderful employees will find work quickly and she gives them all her support with the best regards.

SLIDESHOW: West Seattle Little League to get a new 'Snack Shack'

The Old Faithful Snack Shack from Bar-S Playfield (Located at the end of Admiral Way in Alki) was removed on Tuesday, Oct. 12 and a new expanded version will be constructed in its place.

The new shack is 19' 4" x 32, or almost twice the size of the old building. It will have men's and women's restrooms, and space for storage. The foundation should be poured for it next week. Volunteers will build the actual structure.

The old shack has been there for well over a decade according to West Seattle Little League President Mark Terao. The plan calls for the old shack to remain on site temporarily to be used for storage during construction. A temporary fence will go up around the spot where the new shack is being built to secure the project.
