What were those searchlights for Saturday night?

7-Eleven grand opening continuing

If you looked up in the sky on Saturday over the southern part of the West Seattle peninsula you probably saw some searchlights, painting the cloud cover.

It was the continuing grand opening of the new 7-Eleven store at 35th Ave. s.w. and s.w. Barton.

Owner Nirbhai Singh reports that so far his staff has been extremely busy and business has been great.

What is the biggest hit at the new store? "That would be the Slurpee's", Singh said.

A fight at Ballard High School unfolds a student’s possible criminal involvement

12 P.M. on Jan 5. 1300 block of N.W. 67th Street.

According to police reports, on Tuesday, Jan 4, a fight broke out between various young men around Ballard High School.

The following day, the Seattle Police Department received a call from the BHS Assistant Principal who reported that she had a man in her office who she believed to have been the assaulter from the previous day.

When interviewed by the police, the suspect’s story revealed much more than a petty fight between two young men.

The suspect said he confronted another student because he believed him to have been one of the robbers who robbed his grandmother’s house last December.

There were a total of five suspects that reportedly went inside the suspect’s grandmother’s house on the day of the December robbery. Four suspects wore masks, the other was identified and apprehended. The suspect believed the victim of the assault to have been one of the masked robbers because of rumors he had heard floating around the school.

The suspect admitted to have been present at the fight but denied assaulting anyone.

Des Moines, Federal Way firefighters make wage concessions

The Board of Fire Commissioners for South King Fire & Rescue on Jan. 6 unanimously approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the firefighters of International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 2024 to eliminate a 2 percent Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2011 for Des Moines and Federal Way firefighters.
While the fire department is becoming smaller through attrition and early retirements, forced layoffs are not yet on the line, according to district officials.
They say that SKFR had wisely put aside cash reserves prior to the economic downturn allowing them to keeping existing employees for now, despite the ballot failure of a new revenue source in August of 2010.
The firefighter's union proactively offered a concession without the threat of immediate jobs on the line.
"The firefighters understood the climate of our community and their willingness to enter into negotiations to adjust their salary is a clear reflection of a long standing team effort between management and labor," said Fire Chief Al Church.
