Seattle rocker Duff McKagan, Loaded band draws West Seattle fans to Capitol Hill

Seattle music legend Duff McKagan and his band rocked the roof off Neumos on Capitol Hill last night with the support of West Seattle musicians, filmmakers, and many fans. When West Seattle filmmaker Jamie Chamberlin was no on stage himself, armed with his instrument, a video camera filming the action, he was shoehorned in the front row pressed against the fans and the edge of the stage to get more close-up footage. Assisting him with a second video camera was Eric Cozens, a Loaded fan, and the well-known co-owner of the Mission Latin Restaurant & Lounge in the Admiral Junction.

Backing up "Duff" were Loaded guitarist and vocalist Mike Squires, shirtless drummer Isaac Carpenter, and bass player, vocalist, and West Seattle resident Jeff Rouse.

West Seattle fans included Emily Shepherd, the sister of Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd, rock opera composer Reed Hutchinson, members of West Seattle band Villains of Yesterday, musician and co-owner of Shadowland Ben Jenkins, and Chamberlin's girlfriend, Kathy Bell.

Fire on marine View Dr. S.W. caused by barbeque

By David Rosen

Seattle firefighters quickly responded to a fire in a single family residence in West Seattle at 11242 Marine View Dr. s.w. Saturday night. The first initial call went out at 9:48 pm and was upgraded to a full response as a precautionary measure.

The fire broke out in the back garage and was confined to the garage.

According to Battalion Chief Mike H. Walsh of the SFD,“ This was a fire that was an accidental cause, in the back garage. One of the persons living here set fire to a barbeque by plugging it in thinking he was plugging in a freezer, so it was just a mistake, plugged in the wrong device.

The gentleman that set the fire actually put it out with a couple of extinguishers, and so just to be careful were sending him up to the hospital just to get checked out, but he’s feeling just fine.”

Varsity Soccer: Highline HS tops Tyee on flurry of early goals

The Highline Pirates visited the Tyee Totems in boy’s varsity soccer on Friday night, April 22. The game was at 7:30 p.m. at Highline Stadium (Tyee’s home game however)

First Half

The Pirates pulled off the win by putting in three goals in the first twenty minutes. Tyee responded with two more in the first half, but could not convert the equalizer in Highline’s 3 -2 win.

The first goal came from Highline’s Edgar Martinez at the ten minute mark followed by teammate Cody Wadleigh’s volley ten minutes later.

A loose ball bounced just inside the 18-yard line and Wadleigh crashed on the ball with two Tyee defenders on either side. All three had a foot in the mix but Wadleigh’s boot came through with a volley past Tyee’s keeper, putting the Pirates up 2-0.

Less than a minute later Martinez broke clean from Tyee’s back line, running onto a through ball from the midfield and carrying it with pace until Tyee’s keeper committed to coming off his line. Martinez coolly slotted the ball past the keeper to the upper right at about 15 yards out, putting in his second goal of the night and putting his team up by a generally insurmountable 3 – 0.

SLIDESHOW: West Seattle Thriftway Egg hunt gets huge turnout

Nintendo Wii the top prize among 25,000 eggs

The 20th annual West Seattle Thriftway Easter Egg Hunt saw well over 500 children, parents, grandparents and one very large rabbit show up to look for eggs in places obvious and not so obvious throughout the store on Saturday April 23.

Starting promptly at 9:00 am the first in were the toddlers who were given a couple of minutes to find and collect (up to the 35 limit) plastic eggs. There were 25,000 distributed throughout the store. "A lot of them got recycled from last year," said Paul Kapioski, store owner, " and because Easter and Earth Day are together this year we're handing out recycled bags too."

The top prize was a Nintendo Wii computer game and Kapioski added, "there's candy, toys and 110 prizes from the Wii to Barbie dolls, and Mariner tickets."

While the official designation is 20 years of egg hunts, it actually goes back farther. "We did it back before it was a Thriftway," said Kapioski," when it was a Tradewell, so actually at least 25 years."

"One of our employees here mentioned that she and her sister used to come as kids," Kapioski said.
