Press Release:
With new facilities now in operation, the Department of Finance and Administrative Services (FAS) will recommend to the City Council the sale of two historic former fire stations: Fire Station 37 in West Seattle and Fire Station 38 in Ravenna Bryant.
Proceeds from the sale of the two properties – through a competitive process for fair market value – would be returned to the Fire Facilities and Emergency Response Levy Fund. The levy program includes land sale proceeds in its funding plan.
FAS has published its recommendation, and is collecting comments for 30 days. FAS will then transmit its recommendation, based on the formal evaluation called for in Council Resolution 29799 and amended by Resolution 30862, to the Council. The City Council is expected to consider the future of the buildings as early as June.
The linked fact sheet provides a summary of the property disposition process, as well as the recommendations for the sales.
Also available for download is the Preliminary Report about Fire Station 37 and the Public Involvement Plan for Fire Station 37.
After a very slow 30 months, development in Ballard is on the rise again, announced Barry Hawley of Hawley Realty on Wednesday evening. Hawley said we can expect to see 750 new apartment units in the next two years and another thousand within five to six years if there's a demand.
"It would be a mistake to say it wasn't a tough recession but developments are starting to build again and real estate in Ballard is selling," Hawley said.
Hawley predicts to see developments "sooner than later", especially on some of Ballard's most talked about vacant lots.
"I understand that Avalon will soon move forward on developing the former Sunset Bowl site," he said. Avalon Bay plans to build 234 apartment united and 15,000 square feet of retail space on the corner of 14th Ave N.W. and Market.
Equity Residential has purchased the former Denny’s property and is finalizing permits to build a 261-unit mixed-use building with almost 33,000 square feet of retail space.
And the property east of the Ballard Library on N.W 56th Street, was recently sold for $10 million and Hawley said he thinks the buyers will start developing it soon.
While Varsity softball and tennis got cancelled yesterday, the Ballard boys lacrosse team faced former club partners from Roosevelt.
In previous years Ballard and Roosevelt players had played together for the Roughriders Lacrosse Club. Due to the fast growing popularity of Lacrosse the Ballard players split off this season and created their own club.
Roosevelt turned out to be too strong for the Beavers, defeating them 7 to 6.
Roosevelt jumped out to a 3 to 0 lead early in the game but Ballard had manage to even the score to 3 against 3 by the end of the first period.
The score was tied 5 to 5 at half time. Ballard defenseman Joe Kirkendall scored a quick goal to start the 3rd period but Roosevelt’s Eli Harmon and Eli Hall retaliated with two additional third period scores in what turned out to be the final scores of the game.
Girls:
Ballard's Kelsey Barta netted a hat trick to lead Ballard to a 16 to 4 win over Evergreen on Thursday at Vancouver’s McKenzie Stadium.
The win evened the third-place Beavers’ record to four wins, four loses, no ties.
Last night the Ballard Boys & Girls club opened its new facilities and honored the donors that made it possible with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
"We are a team here at the Ballard Boys & Girls club and today we're celebrating an accomplishment of our team," announced Jenny Boucek, assistant coach of the Seattle Storm and MC for the evening.
"We're celebrating the expansion of our building and the expansion of our family."
The $2.1 million remodel adds an additional 5,000 square feet of classroom space, almost doubling the space of the club, and will allow for approximately 50 kids to come off the waiting list and join the club.
The remodeling process started in September of 2008 when Hendricks asked for funding. Construction started in September of last year and finished in time for the club's 60th anniversary.
Prior to the ribbon cutting, Boucek called student Olivia Vellotti to the stage to share her Ballard Boys & Girls club experience. Velotti is a long-time member of the Ballard Boys & Girls Club and was named the Ballard and King County Youth of the Year for her community involvement and straight-A academic record.

A man was assaulted on April 10th when he went to a friend’s house. The victim said that he knocked on the door and a man spoke rudely to him and punched him in the mouth. The victim said that the assailant was a large, strong man, and the punch knocked the victim to the ground. The victim landed on his arm, then went to the hospital and learned that his arm was broken in three places. He then called the police. The victim believes that the man who punched him is a boyfriend of the female friend he went to visit. He said that the woman is married but has multiple boyfriends and is using illegal drugs. The victim was visibly intoxicated when the police interviewed him, and he repeatedly told the responding officer that he had drunk six brandies.

Scott LaPeer, a Lowman Beach resident, reports that this evening he had an unexpected encounter with crime that finally resulted in an arrest.
"My dog Burt and I came home," LaPeer said," around 7:30 and I came in the house and Burt went out in the yard. I threw a TV dinner in the microwave and fired up the computer and I heard some barking going on and I looked up. There's some dude standing inside my yard and my dog's going ballistic at him and I was dumbfounded there's this guy in my yard. So I walk outside and said, 'Hey, what are you doing?' and he said,
'I'm sorry, I was just trying to find a shortcut to the water.' (...) but he was going the opposite direction from the water and he was wet, wearing a white t-shirt and some baggy pants that were really wet. He was hiding something under the front of his shirt. He never turned directly to me. He walked up out of the driveway and I didn't see him again. I came back inside and called the police.
(A week ago Tuesday my neighbor had someone come in their yard and steal their bike.)
The Boeing Employees Choir performed before a capacity crowd at The Kenney during the April 14 West Seattle Artwalk. As their website states the choir is "a concert choral group serving as The Boeing Company’s ambassador in song, sharing the gift of music with audiences in the Puget Sound Region of Washington State – as well as throughout the world. The choir has existed since the early 1940s."
Led by their music David Chrysler, the choir performed a wide range of music which they describe as being "from Bach to Broadway."
