Kohl-Welles' introduces new medical marijuana bill

Public hearing today in Senate Ways and Means Committee

Responding to Governor Gregoire’s partial veto of Senate Bill 5073, Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-Seattle, along with a bipartisan group of senators, introduced new legislation yesterday to improve Washington’s voter-approved medical cannabis law.

Kohl-Welles' new legislation, SB 5955, addresses the governor’s concerns over state employees’ not being immune from federal arrest and protection by establishing a system of nonprofit patient cooperatives for qualifying patients to obtain their medical marijuana. The revamped bill would also allow local governments to control where dispensaries may be located and provide arrest protection for patients enrolled in a voluntary, confidential state registry.

Pet of the Week: Daphne is a willing herder

Daphne is "probably seven or eight years old" according to her owner Nan Fawthrop, and is a mix of a Border Collie and "something else," Fawthrop said.

She acquired the dog from Three Rivers Rescue in East King County. "I saw a listing on Craigslist that there were going to be 100 dogs up for adoption in March a year ago from various shelter's and rescue groups. My previous dog was a Dalmatian had died a year earlier, so I waited a year and I do favor black and white dogs."

Daphne may be a mixed breed but the herding instinct is strong. "If you were in my house she would grab your pantleg and try to herd you. She tries to herd people If two or more come in she will try to herd them. She will guide you to arrange you."

Another recent surprise for Fawthrop was when she took Daphne to friend's house who had an exotic bird in a cage. "She walked into the house and she sat down and she didn't move for an hour. She stared at the bird. So she may have bird dog in her," Fawthrop said.

Daphne eats a lamb and rice mix from Mud Bay and like many dogs she likes cheese (often used for training) or tiny salmon bites. "They are high reward food in the dog world."

UPDATED: Sea-Based X-band Radar (SBX) vessel spotted

Our photographer Steve Shay and freelance photographer David Rosen were out last night, photographing the glowing Sea-Based X-band Radar vessel as it past by Seattle.

Reader Hovie Hawk also spotted the SBX vessel. He said he noticed that his garage door opener and other wireless devices stopped working between 8:30 and 8:45. When he looked out the window of his Ballard he saw the SBX vessel passing by. Hovie said he later found out the vessel had been jamming the signals.

The SBX vessel is one of the sensors for our nation's missile defense system and is scheduled to arrive in Vigor Shipyards (formerly Todd Pacific Shipyards) on Wednesday.

Google shuts down site run by Italian blogger critical of Amanda Knox prosecutor Mignini

The popular website that has followed the Meredith Kercher murder trial involving West Seattle raised Amanda Knox, www.perugia-shock.blogspot.com, was shut down at about 6:00 p.m. tonight Seattle time. The site, written in English, has been operated for three years by Frank Sfarzo, who is Italian. He often reported from inside the Perugia courtroom, or just after court let out, and has been critical of the justice system in Perugia, particularly of head prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, its treatment of Amanda Knox and its mishandling, as he sees it, of their DNA evidence.

Late edition: The website can still be viewed through April 27, 2011 in Cache form-Wayback Machine Internet Archive:

Stabbing is Des Moines

Police investigating report of two students filmed having sex
Des Moines police are investigating whether two Mount Rainier High School students were filmed having sex at a party. A 15-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy allegedly had sex in front of everybody in the middle of a party. Police believe other students attending the party pulled out their cell phones and the recording was sent out to other students. School administrators got word of the recordings and reported it to the school resource officer who immediately called police. Police are trying to get consent to review the cell phone footage to determine if it includes sexually explicit depictions of a minor. It is a felony to possess or send depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Highline High School student charged with attempted rape
King County prosecutors have charged a Highline High School student with attempted first-degree rape. Chris Lito, 17, is accused of attacking a 16-year-old girl with a brick as she was walking to the Burien Transit Center.

School librarians vital

This professional librarian generates a daily positive impact on the academic achievement of 690 students ages 10-13.

First semester: 9000 titles checked out; 6000 students signed in. Excluding before/after school and classes scheduled.

As librarian, I make the library a safe haven from the tyranny of the middle school lunchroom.
Kids find academics COOL AND COMFORTABLE.

As professional librarians, we are CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICERS making a direct and positive impact on every student’s academic achievement:
WE ARE ALL
• Certificated teachers, most with Master’s Degrees. Our education encompasses deep, broad knowledge of the arts and sciences.
• Up-to-date reading books our students read in order to recommend literature that ‘fits.’
• Continually learning and incorporating new technology, often begging for or even paying ourselves for training.
• Teaching students to ‘learn to discern’ bias, validity, timeliness of print and non-print information.
• Working with every student, teacher, and learning style.

Private property not for public

In the Highline Times I read with interest that Burien's instant poll at a "visioning meeting" indicates that 37 percent of respondents agree strongly that access to the city's (privately owned) shorelines should be open to all residents. I guess 37 percent of respondents think public access to private property is a good idea.

In the same paper, I read that tickets for the Highline Garden Tour are available for $15 to access beautiful privately owned gardens on June 11th. I don't want to pay for that and I don't want to be limited to seeing those gardens on just one day.

At the next "visioning meeting" I would like the city of Burien to ask people if access to the beautiful (privately owned) gardens in Burien should be open to all residents. I don't have a beautiful garden. Maybe I will vote in favor of public access to private gardens.

Asking the public if they would like access to privately owned shorelines or gardens, is asking if Burien should take the property of some Burien residents and give it to the public, at no cost to the person voting "yes."
Next question for Burien residents: Baskin and Robbins has some delicious ice cream. Who would like some?

Normandy Park singer debuts at N.Y. Met, Carnegie Hall

When Deanna Brewick sings, her sweet yet powerful soprano voice commands the stage. Now 24 years old, the Normandy Park native continues to wow audiences, but is dominating stages far from home.

In March, she made her debut at both the New York Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall.

"Her voice is absolutely beautiful," says Fran Reid, voice instructor and owner of Fran Reid Music Studio, formerly located in Normandy Park and now at Angle Lake.

"It's melodious and truly enchanting," says Reid who instructed Breiwick from age 7 to 18 years.

A graduate of Seattle Christian School in SeaTac, Breiwick was a member of the choir and won first place in Washington state for the soprano division during her senior year.

However, nothing quite prepares a singer for their first time competing on stage at the Metropolitan Opera. Breiwick was one of 1,500 singers who participated in the annual Metropolitan Opera's National Council auditions.

She was one of eight singers who earned a spot in the March 14 finals.
