The outdoor Spring Fling and Pinewood Derby at Big Al Brewery, 9832 14th Ave. SW, today, Saturday, helped kick off the 83rd Annual (& 88th year) of the White Center Jubilee Days' Street Fair & Parade.

The crowd braved the chill in the air to hear bands Rats in the Grass, a rock/bluegrass band, and Rat City Brass, which credits Herb Alpert for its sound.

"I've been involved with White Center Jubilee Days for about 25 years, and was president of the committee for two years," said Jerry Robison, a Burien councilmember with a law practice there. "Now I'm an advisor. When I got appointed to the Burien City Council I withdrew from the official positions from Jubilee Days. I still help out with stuff and I've arranged the fireworks.

Tracy Corey is "The Boobie Coach" helping new mothers learn to feed their babies

Tracy Corey has a remarkable job. She's a breastfeeding coach and the owner of Nurturing Expressions near the West Seattle Junction. Referring to herself as "The Boobie Coach", Corey who is a registered nurse and a certified board lactation consultant, began her business in 2004 and saw that the field of breastfeeding research was finding remarkable connections between breastfeeding and infant health and development.

She set up the business on a mobile basis so breast pump specialists could deliver equipment and supplies to new mothers in their homes or the hospital. There are now five lactation consultants in the business.

"For years I was a home care nurse. The hospital was never a place I wanted to practice medicine. I believed I could give the best care to my patients if I could see the environment that they lived in."

Smash-and-grab burglar sentenced in string of West Seattle and Burien burglaries

Police used GPS tracking device to apprehend him

Facing eight counts of second degree burglary and one count of attempted burglary for a series of smash-and-grab burglaries in Burien and West Seattle, Stephen H. Kirk plead guilty to his charges in March.

On May 6, he was sentenced to 5 ½ years in prison for his crimes before Judge Mariane Spearman. It was the high end of his sentencing range. Before Friday’s sentence, Kirk had been booked 37 times and had 89 warrants out since 1984, according to Court Service records.

According to charging documents, through the summer months of 2010 Kirk had a habit of taking rocks, bricks or cinder blocks and chucking them through the windows of businesses between midnight and 6 a.m. Once inside he would take cash from tip jars, gumball machines and cash registers. On a few occasions he took the whole cash register with him.

Seattle Police and King County detectives worked together to identify Kirk as their suspect and KCSO detectives obtained a search warrant to place a GPS tracking device on his red pickup truck on August 6, 2010, according to court documents.

SLIDESHOW: Carne Asada Bowl celebrated with great soccer and good food

The sixth annual Carne Asada Bowl between Chief Sealth’s junior varsity soccer team and the Secondary BOC (Bilingual Orientation Center School) Internationals ended in a 3-2 victory for the Internationals, but everyone with an empty stomach emerged victorious with a plate full of carne asada tacos with all the fixings and dessert to boot.

The event was originally started by Chief Sealth teacher Delfino Munoz and Principal John Boyd. Boyd was the principal at SBOC before heading to Sealth and they came up with the idea along with International’s coach Juan Carlos Torres.

“Today (SBOC) is one of only a few schools nation-wide designed as a preliminary educational portal through which immigrant children pass in their quest for academic achievement and full participation in American society,” according to their website.

Rockers Villains of Yesterday release video filmed in South Park, three bandmembers from West Seattle

Video "Walls" by West Seattle filmmaker Jamie Chamberlin

Cinco de Mayo was celebrated a night early upstairs at the Mission Latin Bar and Restaurant in the Admiral Junction with the band Villains of Yesterday and fans who watched their new video release on the TV monitor there. The track "Walls" is from "Zero in the Sun", their album to be released May 24.

The band formed in Nov., 2009. Bandmember Shawn Zellar, drummer and vocalist, lives south of the Alaska Junction. Carl Klein, guitarist and vocalist, also lives in West Seattle. Terry Houser, lead vocalist, lives in South Park, and Sean Gephardt on bass and vocals lives on the East Side. The video was shot in a 50,000 square-foot warehouse with 30-foot ceilings in South Park by West Seattle videographer Jamie Chamberlin. The West Seattle Herald has featured Chamberlin and his video work with ZZ Top and, currently, Duff McKagan and his band Loaded.

For "Walls", Chamberlin utilized the cavernous, industrial space with high angles and wide shots and even a close-up pan with his fish-eye lens. Well, OK, he could have done that shot in a small room, but it still looks cool.
