The Kenney puts planned redevelopment on hold citing economic reasons

Memory Care Unit still moving ahead

The Kenney, West Seattle's only continuing care retirement community is postponing plans for redeveloping their campus. The plan, which has been in place for the the last three years has been put on hold primarily due to economic reasons.

The Kenney has removed the four Notice of Proposed Land Use Action signs that line the perimeter of their campus. "We knew people would have questions," said Kevin McFeely President and CEO of The Kenney so it was appropriate to contact the media to let people know.

“There are a couple of issues,” said McFeely, “For one, there’s a new economic reality we’re facing that people are having a much harder time selling their home; something that’s concurrent with moving into a retirement community. Second, it’s much tougher to find lenders for new building projects. As we looked at this project we realized the need to scale down the redevelopment plan to continue to reach the needs of our current residents, our future residents and our neighbors.”

SLIDESHOW: Boy’s Varsity Baseball: Chief Sealth pulls off comeback win against West Seattle

It was Senior Day for Chief Sealth’s seniors on May 2, and they pulled of a win in dramatic fashion to honor those heading off into a post-high-school world in a few months.

The final tally was 7-6 with Sealth pulling out of a three run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning and ending it all with a walk off home run.

The teams were all square at two runs a piece after two innings. West Seattle started working on their lead, getting one run in the third and going up 3-2.

In the fifth inning Sealth pitcher #14 AJ Rose let in two more runs off hits from West Seattle’s #20 Sam Hellinger and #9 Mike Wickham, leading to a pitcher change for the Seahawks.

Edit: Corrected the pitcher change to Keone Kela instead of Eric Swenson.

Twelve-year-old bassist from Ballard to release indie record

At 12 years old, Kaye Gill has more “music cred” than most musicians twice her age. In the three years since she started to play bass, Gill has played on just about every stage in Seattle including The Crocodile, Chop Suey, The Showbox, The Triple Door and Bumbershoot.

As the bass player for the fast rising Seattle indie alt-pop band, Verlee for Ransom, she is getting ready to release her debut CD on May 20th at Q Cafe along with The Oh Wells and The Warm Hardies.

A product of The School of Rock, Gill was still an elementary school student when she auditioned for the band.

After she impressed the band during the audition they asked which school she attended. "They were very surprised thatt she was still in elementary school," said Aaron Gill, Kaye Gill's father.

The band's oldest member is 20 year-old keyboard player Rio Chanae and the band is led by singer songwriter Keira Verlee, 17. Together, the band produces songs well beyond their age.

"It's been really fun playing with them," said Kaye Gill, a sixth grader at Whitman Middle School. "The maturity levels range but we fit really well together."

Opinion: OBL's Death a Victory for the Adults

By C. Edmund Wright

The children are celebrating and taking credit for the death of Osama bin Laden, but make no mistake about it, this is a win for the adults. This will give Obama a short-term boost in the polls, but I submit after a few days or weeks of liberal celebration, reality will start to sink in for more and more Americans.

Now by adults, I mean folks mature enough to understand that the world is a mean place ruled by the aggressive use of power and that the only way to stop evil from ruling is for the good guys to use more power and to use it more aggressively.

And by children, I mean the overgrown juveniles who refuse to understand this reality as it is and who like to think the Muslim world adored us until Bush-Cheney and Rumsfeld came to power. Long before election day of 2012, this will become evident.

Because when you drill down, the death of bin Laden has nothing to do with the core beliefs of this President or the entire liberal movement.

Beavers Sports Roundup: May 2nd

The varsity baseball played against Bothell last night in a game that got rained out in the extra inning.
The Beavers started off the game well with a double by Rory and a RBI single by Kangas, gaining a 1-0 lead over Woodinville. With

Brendan Foor on the mound, the Beavers kept Woodinville scoreless until the bottom of the third when Woodinville scored five runs. Ballard didn't score again until the sixth inning, trailing behind Woodinville 5 to 2. Ballard made a great comeback in the seventh inning, taking the lead 6 to 5. Woodinville tied it up in the bottom of the seventh inning and the game went into an extra inning. But then a serious rain shower came down forcing the game to stop.

Coach John Lamm told the BNT this morning that he's unsure if the game will be replayed. Lamm said the outcome of the game will not affect the teams' standings in the league. Ballard continues to be the fourth seed in the playoffs and Woodinville, the second seed.
